With its distance runners priming for the bigger events ahead, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team soared to the top of the standings during last Friday’s John Arcaro Classic at Baldwinsville.
The Hornets, earning 87 points, were well clear of runner-up Cicero-North Syracuse, who had 69 points. East Syracuse Minoa and Christian Brothers Academy tied for eighth with 28 points.
An exciting 1,500-meter race had F-M senior Claire Walters go four minutes, 34.96 seconds to hold off Liverpool rival Jenna Schulz (4:38.28) as Grace Kaercher was third in 4:52.12. Phoebe White won the 800-meter run in 2:15.07 as Bishop Grimes’ Sophia Hatton was fourth in 2:27.57.
Susan Bansbach tore to a season-best 58.93 seconds to win the 400-meter dash, with Fiona Mejico fifth in 1:00.86. Emily Cook was second in the 3,000-meter run in 10:58.36 as Hannah Kaercher (11:07.33) was third.
Walters, Bansbach, White and Maddy Duggleby roared to a time of 9:21.33 in the 4×800 relay, nearly a full minute ahead of runner-up C-NS (10:10.25). Then White, Bansbach, Mejico and Brennan Jolly won the 4×400 relay in 4:08.33.
The Hornets’ Samantha Pynn had a third-place triple jump of 32 feet 2 inches. Harper Stoppacher cleared 4’10” in the high jump to get fifth place, while Isabel Limbert finished sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:15.94. Wren Usiatynski was seventh in the pole vault.
Many of CBA’s points came from Olivia Morganti roaring to a time of 6:58.51 to win the 2,000-meter steeplechase, chased by, among others, F-M’s Ani Sydorowych, who was fourth in 7:49.90.
Skye Ryan was second in the shot put with a toss of 30’3 ½”, and added a third-place finish in the discus, heaving it 87’10”.
ESM’s Sophie Hartz got third place in the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds flat, with Jennah Ferrari third in the high jump by clearing 5 feet as Hartz took seventh in the long jump. Hartz, Lailani Carrion, Kayleigh Maloof and Rylie King fourth in the 4×100 relay in 52.95 seconds as F-M was sixth.
Meanwhile, in the boys edition of the Arcaro Classic, F-M finished fifth with 50 points, going 1-2 in the mile as Nolan Chiles prevailed in 4:25.07 over Sam Otis, who had 4:26.33.
Yakob Kelley was second for the Hornets in the 3,200-meter run in 9:51.32. The Hornets also won a muscle version of the 4×100 as Sawyer Dereszynski, Preston Koester, Ethan Bird and Michael Palmer finished in 51.73 seconds.
Ryan Serp was third in the 400 hurdles in 59.43 seconds, with Owen Snyder (1:02.49) fifth. Matt Tripp, in 2:02.12, beat out Corey Meskos (2:02.58) for third place in the 800 as Corey Gallagher needed 11.76 seconds for fifth place in the 100. The Hornets were fifth in the 4×400 in 3:42.29.
ESM’s Elijah Buck won the discus with a throw of 132’5” as Dereszynski was fifth with 102’11”, this after Buck finished fifth in the shot put with 39 feet.
Rocky El went 39’7” in the triple jump to finish fifth and was sixth in the 400 hurdles, with Nick Berg sixth in the 400-meter dash and Michael Parks seventh in the 110 hurdles.
CBA’s Joel Gaffney went 2:01.76 for second place in the 800, while Zach Medicis was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:26.96. Phillip Tam threw the discus 99’7” to finish seventh.
Meanwhile, at the Oneida Coed Invitational, Jamesville-DeWitt finished sixth in the girls standings, while the boys got two wins from James Richer, who threw the discus 128’11” and the shot put 47’7”. Nick Dekaney was third in the boys pentathlon with 2,355 points and Haberle Conlon was sixth in the 100 sprint.
Spreading things out, the J-D girls had a victory in the pentathlon from Laetticia Bazile, who won three of the five events and earned 2,140 points to beat Rome Free Academy’s Tailyn Frost by 331 points.
Sophia Vinciguerra went 2:26.75 to finish second in the 800, while Amanda Semmel, Rebecca Kasis, Jillian Kordis and Stella Heflin were second in the 4×800 in 10:53.99.
Denise Yaeger, with a triple jump of 32’10”, earned another second-place finish. Eva Wisniewski cleared 8’6” for third place in the pole vault and was fourth in the 200 in 27.60 seconds. Brelyn Tyler got sixth place in the shot put with 29’ ½”.
