Just when it needed a respite, the Skaneateles girls basketball team skidded against high-level competition before getting a much-needed reprieve.
In last Tuesday’s game at state-ranked Bishop Grimes, the Lakers hung close for a while, but still watched the Cobras get clear, leading to a 55-34 defeat.
Skaneateles only trailed, 10-7, through one period, and it was 20-16 deep into the second quarter before a series of 3-pointers late in the half left the Lakers behind, 29-19, at the break.
Only managing a handful of field goals in the second half, Skaneateles wore down, despite 14 points from sophomore center Joanna Dobrovosky and nine points from freshman Elizabeth Lane. For Grmies, Erannan Shattuck led with 15 points, while Amelia Heiselman and Jordan Vaught earned 11 points apiece.
Badly needing a win Thursday against Hannibal, the Lakers got it, rallying from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the Warriors 48-44.
In a back-and-forth first half, Skaneateles doubled Hannibal’s production, 14-7, only to see the Warriors do the same thing in the second period to tie it, 21-21, at halftime, going on to take a 38-33 lead by the time the third quarter was done.
But the Lakers cranked up its defensive pressure, and it paid off, with Hannibal held to just six points in the final period as Skaneateles surged out in front to stay.
Jackie Leslie took charge of the Lakers’ attack, pouring in a season-best 21 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers. Dobrovosky finished with 10 points, while Emily Call threw in eight points. For Hannibal, Taylor Sorrell (13 points), Allie Taylor (12 points) and Devin Sorrell (11 points) all hit double figures.
Now at 6-7 on the season, Skaneateles welcomes undefeated, state Class B no. 5-ranked Westhill Tuesday night before meeting Homer on Thursday.
