Baldwinsville boys lacrosse defeated by West Genesee, F-M

Bees unable to contain Wildcats, victimized by fourth-quarter Hornets rally

BALDWINSVILLE – Ask the Baldwinsville boys lacrosse team if it would take scoring 16 goals against West Genesee, and the Bees would gladly have done so, fully expecting victory and perhaps a lopsided one.

Instead, the Bees’ 18-16 defeat to the Wildcats Tuesday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium reflected just how important it was to have WG back in the Class A ranks after a couple of years spent in Class B.

Ultimately, the Bees paid for a poor start on defense.

All through the first quarter the Wildcats kept finding the net at a volume B’ville found impossible to match, not letting up until it had established an 8-3 advantage.

From there, they essentially traded goals through the middle stages, yet the Bees did not make up much ground, still trailing 16-12 going to the fourth quarter and only able to make up half that deficit late.

B’ville was led by Iggy LoMedico’s five goals and two assists, Brady Garcia adding four goals and Ty Lynch three goals plus an assist. Dylan Garcia converted twcie and single goals went to Alessio McGrane and Matt Niedzialek.

With his seven goals and one assist, Charlie Lockwood anchored a WG attack where Jake McMahon scored four times and Chace Cogan added three goals. It was also key for Wildcats goalie Jon Shoults to make 14 saves, five more than Bees counterpart Jake Seefeldt.

Another high-profile match awaited on Thursday with B’ville hosting Fayetteville-Manlius, a game where the Bees, despite two different long scoring runs, still squandered a late lead and fell to the Hornets 15-12.

Staring at a 3-1 deficit in the opening minutes, B’ville answered with four straight goals. Then F-M took over, giving itself a 10-6 advantage going into halftime.

What followed in the third quarter was the Bees winning nearly every faceoff and turning long possessions into goals. LoMedico, Lynch and Dylan Garcia all converted before Niedzialek hit on three consecutive goals.

All of this put the Bees in front 12-10, but it didn’t hold. F-M took full advantage of a string of B’ville mistakes in the final period as it caught up at 12-12 and went in front in the final minutes with goals from Tom Porter, Tyler Burns and Randal Hearn.

Zach Bice stepped up early for the Bees, finishing with three goals and two assists. Dylan and Brady Garcia both had three assists, with LoMedico scoring twice and John Martoccia earning eight saves. Hearn, Porter and Colin Clark led F-M with three goals apiece.

After facing Irondequoit on Saturday three more games await next week, highlighted by Thursday’s first battle with Liverpool since last spring’s sectional Class A final, which falls in between visits from East Syracuse Minoa and Section V powerhouse Victor.
