Even though the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team only split its two games with reigning Section III Class A champion Auburn on April 28 and 29, the Red Rams had more respect outside of Central New York.
In last week’s state Class A rankings, the Red Rams found itself at no. 15, seven spots ahead of the Maroons at no. 22.
When it resumed action last week, J-D ripped through two league opponents, starting Tuesday when it took apart Cortland 20-0 as Kaira McMahon limited the Purple Tigers to one hit while striking out 10.
An early 5-0 lead expanded when the Red Rams netted six runs in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth, and Kate Dorazio stood out, going five-for-five with a home run, double, three singles, four runs scored and four RBIs.
Kayla McQuaid and Amanda Aitken drove in three runs apiece, with Emma White getting a pair of RBIs as Emily Bulone scored three runs.
Then, facing Central Square on Friday afternoon, J-D gave up plenty of runs, but still doubled up on the Redhawks on the way to an 18-9 victory.
Dorazio went four-for-five with two doubles, two singles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Miriam Zogbhy scored four times as she doubled and drove in four runs, with Bella Sindoni getting three RBIs. McMahon went three-for-five and drove in a pair of runs.
East Syracuse Minoa returned to action Thursday once the rain stopped and battled to its own 4-2 victory over Central Square, overcoming a 2-1 deficit with a run in the fifth and two decisive runs in the top of the seventh.
Olivia Goff pitched well, striking out 12 Redhawks while only allowing three hits. Brooke Kirkpatrick was the only player on either side to get two hits as Morgan Ransom scored twice and RBIs went to Goff, Natalie Quonce and Jaylianna Sabatino.
Following this up on Friday afternoon, ESM beat Syracuse City 10-5, netting two runs in five different innings and building an early 6-0 lead. Sabatino and Mollie Comstock both drove in two runs, with Ransom adding two doubles, a single and RBI as Quonce scored three times.
However, ESM lost, 1-0, to Auburn on Saturday. Ransom pitched and only gave up a third-inning run driven in by Madison Lowe, who also pitched for the Maroons and limited the Spartans to one hit, by Brefka.
Christian Brothers Academy pulled out an 11-10 decision over Skaneateles last Tuesday thanks to a lineup where every single batter got at least one hit.
Mackenzie Witz led the Brothers, going four-for-four, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Julia DelPino’s two singles led to three RBIs as Avery Bowman scored three times. Erin Nardella scored twice and drove in two runs as single RBIs went to Aubrey Vincentini, Allison Boule, Lauren Zollo and Giuliana Sindoni.
Even more runs were scored on Thursday when CBA doubled up Solvay 20-10 in a remarkable effort where it trailed 9-1 in the third inning but then scored four times in the bottom of the third, followed by three consecutive five-run outbursts.
Witz topped her Skaneateles performance by going deep twice for home runs and getting five RBIs. Bowman also drove in five runs, matching Witz and DelPino by scoring four times as Vincentini and Nardella got two RBIs apiece.
Rained out most of the week, Fayetteville-Manlius finally returned to the diamond on Saturday and picked up a 14-4 victory over Section IV’s Chenango Forks.
Megan Woodridge twice went deep for home runs as she finished with four RBIs. Avery Howe also drove in four runs as Lily Fowler scored three times and Gracie Bishop got two RBIs. Paige Graves, Ella Keyes, Natalie Mayne and Julianna Hall also drove in runs.
