SYRACUSE – Each of the Baldwinsville track and field teams will face big tests next week when they take on Liverpool in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division opener at LHS Stadium.
Before that, though, the Bees tuned up with twin appearance at Westhill’s Spring Break Invitational Tuesday afternoon, where it achieved some victories on the boys side.
Sam Mellinger, in the 100-meter dash, beat the field in 10.89 seconds, nearly half a second ahead of Jamesville-DeWitt’s Nick Dekaney (11.34) as Kaleb Paul was seventh in 11.69.
In the 4×400 relay, the Bees were triumphant as Logan Hayes, Jack McAllister, Kyle Sheckler and Owen Weaver went 3:31.44, more than 10 seconds ahead of J-D’s second-place 3:41.48.
Weaver didn’t stop there, either, going to the triple jump and, with a top leap of 41 feet 7 inches, edging the 41’3” from Cicero-North Syracuse’s Carlton Garnes as Noah Covert was fourth with 38’3”.
Arthur Bauer went 4:44.18 in the 1,600-meter run, second to J-D’s Alex Martinez (4:37.49), while Brandon Levin was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 23.49, edging McCallister (23.64) in fifth place as Hayes (23.77) was seventh.
Jeff Ragonese went 2:02.56 in the 800-meter run and gained third place. Jacob Guelli was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:26.10, while Solomon Holden-Betts went 9:44.16 in the 3,200-meter run invitational to take seventh place.
Dan Ewald threw the shot put 40 feet 8 inches for third place, with Adam Cuyler (37’8 ½”) eighth. Robert Thompson tied for fourth in the long jump with 19’3”, while Tyler Rawlins was fourth and Weaver fifth in the high jump, each clearing 5’4”. Scheckler had a fifth-place pole vault of 8’6”.
B’ville was also victorious in the 3×110 shuttle hurdles, where the combined time of 58.40 seconds beat out the 59.31 from runner-up Chittenango.
In the girls meet at Westhill, the Bees’ Lauren Letourneau shared the title in the long jump, her best attempt of 15’5” matching that of Tully’s Emma Byrne. Nela Loftin had a third-place triple jump of 32’2 ¾”, while Sydney McKenney finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing 9’6”.
Also, B’ville’s 4×400 team of McKenney, Kamryn Barton, Avamarie Davis and Claire Horan was second in 4:23.37. On her own, Barton was sixth in the 200 in 27.74 seconds, while Mary Sabatino took sixth in the 800 in 2:38.41.
