CENTRAL NEW YORK – It stopped raining just in time to have the Cazenovia field hockey team formally honor head coach Lorraine Scheftic for reaching the 300-win plateau during last Friday’s game against Oneida.
Having reached that milestone Sept. 17 with a win at Cato-Meridian, the Lakers pressed on from there and, with more success last week, extended its win streak to five games.
Cazenovia returned to Cayuga County last Wednesday to take on a long-time rival, Weedsport, and played a particularly strong second quarter on the way to shutting out the Warriors 5-0.
Scoring three times in that frame after seizing an early 1-0 lead, the Lakes were led by Ainsley Schug, who eventually recorded a three-goal hat trick.
Reid McMurtrie was part of it, too, ultimately gaining two assists to go with her lone goal as Sammy Sparks got the other goal. Sophie Clancy and Emily Forrett chimed in with assists.
Then it was back home to Burton Street to face Oneida, and amid all the celebration and festivities for Scheftic, Cazenovia did not forget about the game itself.
In fact, the Lakers didn’t waste any time, sprinting ahead of the Indians 3-0 before the first quarter was done and, after a quiet mid-game spell, converting twice more in the final period.
This meant another 5-0 victory, with Hadley Schug scoring twice and getting an assist, while single goals went to Sparks, Cady Webb and Nadia Segal. Forrett earned a pair of assists, with Ainsley Schug also getting an assist.
At 6-2 midway through its regular-season slate, the Lakers would aim for six in a row Tuesday against Clinton before visiting Homer on Friday afternoon.
