ONONDAGA COUNTY – Now the area’s high school girls volleyball teams have made it to the end of their 2021 seasons, mostly glad just to have the opportunity to compete after months of uncertainty.
Fayetteville-Manlius, a week removed from its landmark victory over Baldwinsville, handled Corcoran last Monday night in a 25-8, 25-17, 25-12 sweep where Kaylene Nobel earned six aces. Harper Stoppacher and Amanada Groesbeck had seven kills apiece, with Morgan Napier getting 12 assists and Zoe Myint adding 11 assists.
It was just as lopsided for the Hornets when it romped past West Genesee 25-7, 25-18, 25-13 two nights later. Napier, with 28 assists and 10 digs, fed it to Stoppacher, who got 10 kills and 10 digs, and Nobel, who finished with nine kills and three blocks. Nina Avery added five kills and Molly McNany had seven digs.
When F-M swept Nottingham 25-17, 25-10, 25-19 on Friday night, it improved to 10-3 overall with matches this week against East Syracuse Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt.
Meeting Cortland early last week, ESM won the first set 25-22 but could not keep up that pace, dropping the next two sets 25-18 and 25-9 before a close fourth set went 26-24 in the Purple Tigers’ favor to end it.
Laura Sitnik still produced 12 kills and nine digs, with Autumn Stoia adding 11 kills. Helaina Scolaro (18 digs) and Morgan Ransom (15 digs) led the ESM defense as Alana Day managed 25 assists.
Rebounding on Thursday, the Spartans swept Central Square
Jamesville-DeWitt was 3-5 going into last Monday’s match with 6-1, but handled the Red Raiders 25-12 and 25-16 in the first two sets and, after a 25-21 defeat in the third, the Red Rams closed it out 25-16 in the fourth.
Linda Shen led the way, amassing 17 kills, four aces and 12 digs, helped on J-Ds’ front line by Sophia Ferris, who earned eight kills and 10 digs.
Elsa Hardt had seven kills, with Amber Hamernik getting six kills and matching Jess Burgess as they both got nine digs. Maris Ryan piled up 32 assists and seven digs as Cassie Cappelletti had 14 digs.
In its own match with Cortland on Saturday, J-D battled past the Purple Tigers 25-21, 28-26, 25-20, led again by Ryan, who had 29 assists, six kills and eight digs.
Shen had 12 kills and four digs as Ferris got 11 kills to go with six digs, with Hamernik getting eight kills and eight digs. Hardt earned six kills
Bishop Grimes won head-to-head over Manlius-Pebble Hill last Tuesday night, the Cobras getting a 25-9, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of the Trojans.
Avery Burnette put together six aces, seven digs and four kills, with Izzy Kinsey adding nine kills. Lexi Emmi picked up 18 assists and five aces as Leah Perry had three kills and Tori Sikorski earned three digs.
Grimes then beat Syracuse Academy of Science 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 on Thursday. Burnette, with seven aces, 10 digs and six kills, led the Coras as Kinsey gained 10 kills and Emmi finished with 13 assists. MPH lost that same night to Bishop Ludden 29-27, 25-15, 25-12.
Christian Brothers Academy almost reached the win column in last Monday’s match against Skaneateles.
Having lost seven in a row, the Brothers won the opening set 25-23 over the Lakers and lost the second 25-17. A long third set went 28-26 in Cazenovia’s favor.
Traling again, CBA rallied again, dominating the fourth set 25-14. A long, tense final set followed, but two points from victory the Brothers could not get there, Skaneateles pulling it out 27-25.
Lily Geneocco and Bella Roberson each had six kills, with Roberson adding six blocks and Geneocco seven digs. Molly Niedzwicki got four kills and four blocks, with Ashley Brown earning nine assists and eight digs. Catherine Halstead paced the defense with 15 digs, matching Geneocco and Grace Catlano with three aces apiece.
After this, CBA fell to Westhill 25-15, 25-17, 25-7 on Wednesday night and, against Homer on Friday, grabbed a set but still lost 25-15, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22 to the Trojans.
