ONONDAGA COUNTY – An entire girls swimming season has led up to this Thursday’s clash at Nottingham High School between two undefeated sides, Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy.
The Brothers swam twice last week, starting out at Baldwinsville Tuesday and cruising past the Bees 55-37 while letting its top swimmers mostly rest.
Kayla Newman still swam the 500 freestyle, though, and her 5:13.08 beat out B’ville’s Eva Smith (5:23.91) as she also paired with Darien Tompkins, Claire Krueger and Madison Ceclia to go 4:06.56 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Ava Ascenzo was first in the 200 freestyle (2:26.10) and 100 backstroke (1:19.20). Tompkins won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.91 to Jenna Filahn’s 1:08.85, while Ella Zaryski took the 200 individual medley in 2:18.68. Olivia Davis (50 freestyle), and Kathryn Nardella (100 freestyle) also won events.
Then, against West Genesee Thursday night, CBA prevailed again, 95-67, with Lauren Kelly back in the lineup and winning twice, going 25.28 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 1:06.47 in the 100 breaststroke.
Newman tore to a time of 1:57.18 in the 200 freestyle. Ascenzo (1:12.46) and Davis (1:17.14) went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly as Mia Ludington was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:15.40. Sofia Kassab earned 222.80 points in diving.
Zaryski swam the 200 IM in 2:31.41 to hold off Filahn (2:32.21), with that pair joined by Kelly and Nardella to go 2:03.68 in the 200 medley relay as Newman, Nardella, Kelly and Kami Petrosilio won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.79.
Jamesville-DeWitt had its own meet against Baldwinsville on Thursday and prevailed, 52-42, over the Bees to climb back above the .500 mark and improve to 5-4.
Audrey Norden led the Red Rams at this meet, prevailing twice. Posting a time of 27.54 seconds, Norden took the 50 freestyle and later was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.43.
Caroline Skaken got first in the 200 IM in 2:25.49 as Elizabeth Smith claimed the 100 butterfly in 1:23.13 and Josie Coyne, in 6:12.55, beat the field in the 500 freestyle.
Norden, Claire Huyck, Sofia Bebla and Emily Ninestein swam the 200 medley relay in 2:05.74. Bebla and Norden joined Lucy Heflin and Caitlin McMahon to go 1:54.39 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Before that, the Red Rams took out Auburn 66-49 last Tuesday and showcased some of its other swimmers to go with Abby McGuire earning 226.80 points in diving ahead of Grace Evans (183.22).
In a close 100 freestyle, Marina Stella, in 1:06.10, edged McGuire’s 1:06.53. Other first-place finishes went to Skaken (200 IM), Coyne (500 freestyle) and Jillian Dominicos (200 freestyle), with Bebla, Huyck, Ninestein and Heflin pairing up to swim the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.99.
After this split of last week’s meets, J-D faces West Genesee and Liverpool to close out its season.
