Without question, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse team got everyone’s attention when it went to Fayetteville-Manlius on May 4 and knocked off the Hornets 14-12.
That win propelled the Red Rams to no. 3 in the latest state Class C rankings, perhaps setting up a real run at the program’s first-ever state title as the Hornets fell from no. 2 to no. 4 in the state Class B poll.
Not having any letdown, J-D met Cortland last Tuesday night and got seven assists from Lindsay MacLachlan to lead a well-balanced attack in a 17-9 win over the Purple Tigers.
Gabby Modeski recorded her first three-goal varsity hat trick, with Riley LaTray also scoring three times. Lily Loewenguth, Jordan Archer and Ana Dieroff had two goals apiece. MacLachlan got one goal, matching Everly Kessler, Chloe Loewenguth and Kailey McKenna.
F-M, meanwhile, rebounded on Tuesday with an 18-12 win over Liverpool, but even this game wasn’t easy early, the Warriors playing the Hornets to a 5-5 halftime tie.
Gradually, F-M wore Liverpool’s defense down, seeing Annie Steigerwald earn five goals and five assists. Kiera Shanley added four goals, with Katie Shanley, Kaylee Steigerwald and Maddie Noel getting three goals apiece.
They both won again on Thursday, J-D taking out Fulton 18-8 in a game that was quite close in the first half, the Rams only leading 7-6 before wearing down the Red Raiders in the latter stages.
MacLachlan continued to dazzle with six goals and two assists, with Dieroff getting four goals and two assists. Again, LaTray got a three-goal hat trick as McKenna and Lily Loewenguth each scored twice. Archer had one goal and one assist.
F-M roared past Cicero-North Syracuse 19-7 that same night, roaring out to a 13-3 edge by halftime as Kaylee Steigerwald led the way, her six assists a career high to go with three goals.
Noel also achieved a career mark, finding the net five times to match Kiera Shanley, while Katie Shanley had three goals and two assists. Annie Steigerwald scored twice and Gemma Adonizio added a goal.
Meanwhile, Christian Brothers Academy got its own signature win last Monday night when it went to Westhill and upended the state Class D no. 4-ranked Warriors 11-7.
A day earlier, at Alibrandi Stadium, CBA had dropped a tense 10-9 battle with state Class C no. 6-ranked Mount Sinai, the Brothers not quite able to overcome a 6-3 halftime deficit.
Still, the effort was superb, Iris Vinal recording 10 saves to keep her team in it as Bella Roberson scored three times. Gracie Britton had two goals, with Tatum Kohlbrenner, Gia Anthony and Amanda Winn each getting one goal and one assist. Riley Taylor had a goal and Grace Glowaki contributed a pair of assists.
The confidence gained from that performance carried over into the Westhill game, with CBA dominating the first half by winning most of the draws and staying patient on the attack as it built a 6-1 margin.
Withstanding the Warriors’ late charge, the Brothers got a career-best five assists from Kohlbrenner, who helped Roberson, Britton and Taylor each notch three-goal hat tricks. Kohlbrenner and Anthony had single goals and Vinal finished with six saves.
A 21-8 win over Jordan-Elbridge followed on Thursday night, Britton netting five goals and Taylor four goals as Roberson and Anthony each scored twice. Kohlbrenner had four assists and Bella Cannizzo added three assists.
East Syracuse Minoa dropped a wild 18-16 decision to Fulton on Senior Night, with the Spartans controlling things early and building a 9-3 halftime lead, only to see its defense get torn apart by the Red Raiders in the second half.
Emma Weaver had nine goals, with Keara Patterson adding five goals and one assists, as Fulton outscored ESM 15-7 in that second half, negating big nights from Julianna Barton, who had six goals, and Kelly Thomas, who got five goals.
Aside from Barton and Thomas, Rileigh White had two goal and two assists, with Sophia Orlando getting a goal and three assists. Katherine Andrus had one goal and one assist.
In Thursday’s 22-11 win over Oswego, ESM had White get four goals and four assists. Orlando also had four goals, with Andrus, Thomas and Julia Caruana each producing three goals. Barton and Biel both had two goals and one assist.
ESM then made it two in a row Saturday, outscoring Carthage 20-11. Andrus, Thomas and Orlando each had four goals, Andrus adding three assists as White got three goals and four assists. Barton and Natalie Sturick had two goals apiece.
