At least through its first cycle of Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division matches, the Liverpool girls golf team remained unblemished.
And in last Wednesday’s clash against Fayetteville-Manlius with first place in the league at stake, the Warriors nearly got its biggest victory in years, denied by just two strokes in a 176-178 defeat to the Hornets.
On the back nine at F-M’s home course of Green Lakes, Liverpool’s Mia and Natalya Avotins shared low individual honors, each shooting 38 to put the Warriors in front.
When Lindsey Toper shot 49 and Hannah Dombroski added a 53, Liverpool had its team total as Julia Commane (56) and Mackenzie Cahl (63) trailed them.
F-M’s Justine Burness led her side with a 42, four shots behind the Avotins sisters, but the Hornets caught up and passed Liverpool with a 44 from Lucy Fowler and 45s from Bailey Wallace and Elly Hulslander.
Having already defeated Baldwinsville on April 26, Liverpool turned to its other neighbors and won again last Monday, handling Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue team 171-188 in a well-played match at Northern Pines.
Natalya Avotins picked up a 37 for Liverpool, with Mia Avotins shooting a 39. They were both just ahead of C-NS Blue’s low round of 40 shot by Abby Ainsworth.
It was Dombroski’s 46 and a 49 from Commane that helped the Warriors hang on, with the Northstars seeing Amy Krohl post a 45, Emma Piper post a 49 and Jennifer Carl finish with a 54.
And after the battle with F-M, Liverpool proceeded to flatten West Genesee 170-230 on Friday afternoon, in the process breaking the school record for low team score of 177 at Liverpool Country Club that it set two years ago.
Mia Avotins had a 38, with Natalya Avotins shooting 40 as Dombroski was third with a 44. Toper contributed a 48 and Commane improved to a 51.
Back on Monday, Baldwinsville offered its challenge to F-M at Green Lakes, and fell short as the Hornets defeated the Bees 182-216.
Margaret Dec, by shooting a 43, did share low individual honors with Burness, but six different Hornets shot 53 or lower. By contrast, the next-best B’ville round was a 58 from Colleen Vredenburg as Jessica Bylinsky finished with a 61.
On Wednesday, as Liverpool dueled with F-M, C-NS Blue defeated West Genesee 199-228. Ainsworth had a 45 at Northern Pines, two ahead of the Wildcats’ Mikaela Riley, while Krohl shot a 48, Jessica Ricciardi had a 52 and McKenzie Lalone added a 54.
Then C-NS Blue faced B’ville on Friday, and by a 195-204 margin the Northstars pulled it out, Ainsworth shooting a 43 at Timber Banks ahead of Krohl’s 46. Lalone had a 54, beating out Jessica Ricciardi, who shot 55
Before this, C-NS Blue defeated East Syracuse Minoa Blue 200-230 last Tuesday at Northern Pines. Krohl, with a 43, went to the forefront as Ainsworth shot a 47. Carl managed a 54 and Piper added a 56.
C-NS Green started its week last Monday with a 229-256 defeat to West Genesee at Westvale, with Cali Heick shooting a 61 for the Northstars, though it was well behind the 47 by the Wildcats’ Mikaela Riley.
A day later, C-NS Green got its first win of the season, topping ESM’s Orange team 242-265, again with Heick leading her side, posting a 62 on this occasion.
