Long established as one of the best sides in Central New York, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team set out on its 2019 season by earning two wins during the April school break.
The Hornets faced both East Syracuse Minoa teams last Tuesday afternoon at Green Lakes, with F-M shooting 175 to ESM Blue’s total of 250 and ESM Orange’s total of 274.
Bailey Wallace and Justine Burness both shot 42 over Green Lakes’ back nine, while Lucy Fowler was close behind, posting a 43. Elly Hulslander had a 48 as Ashley Carter shot 53 and Ally Egnaczyk got a 54.
For ESM Blue, Gia Vito’s 58 led the way, with Hannah Johnson and Carey Sloan both posting 62 and Lauren Miller adding a 64. ESM Orange featured a 64 from Amber Cardarelli and a 67 from Emily Williams.
Then it was F-M facing Auburn on Thursday afternoon at Highland Park Golf Club. Multi-time state champion Lindsay May had graduated, making the Maroons far more vulnerable than in seasons past.
The Hornets defeated the Maroons 179-233, with Fowler working through the winds to shoot 41 as Hulslander posted a 45. Burness had a 46, just ahead of Wallace’s 47 as Egnaczyk and Carter both finished at 48. Lexi Flurschutz and Dori Masters both shot 56 to lead Auburn.
ESM Blue went Timber Banks on Thursday to face Baldwinsville, who had knocked off Oswego two days earlier. Here, the Spartans were closer than it was to F-M, but still lost 215-233 to the Bees.
Vito and Sloan both shot 57, but that was a total B’ville’s Margaret Dec matched and two others topped as Cara Vredenburg had a 46 and Colleen Vredenburg contributed a 53. Johnson shot a 59 and Jessica Carhart posted a 60.
