Barely 24 hours after a heavy snowfall on the first day of April, the courts cleared out and dried up for the West Genesee boys tennis team to open its 2019 season against visiting Skaneateles.
And the Wildcats were able to prevail, 6-1, over the Lakers, claiming every singles match in straight sets.
James Plunkett and Matt Mannara both won 6-0, 6-0 singles decisions, Plunkett over Andrew Neumann, Mannara over Nate Fouts. Ben Paoli followed by topping Duncan Raddant 6-3, 6-1.
Moving to doubles, Stefan Atanasov and Noah Ruston put WG on the board by handling Sam Gadjo and Jack Panasci 6-2, 6-1, with Ryan Joyce and Max Mekker taking a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luke Lynn and Frank Schmeling.
Skaneateles got its lone point when Trevor Knupp and Marcus McClanahan overcame a rough start and a second-set tie-breaker to beat Dan Good and Ty Lisi 1-6, 7-6, 6-1. The Wildcats’ David Puma and Michael White routed Mirco Kunz and Andrew Moss 6-0, 6-1.
It was still dry, though quite cold, on Thursday afternoon when Westhill faced Phoenix, and dominated that match not dropping a set in a 5-0 shutout of the Firebirds.
In the trio of singles matches, Jackson Bradley got the Warriors going with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Evan Baldini. Ryan Rolince followed it up by topping Josh VanGorder 6-2, 6-2 as Dan Ferrara handled Jeff Cooper 6-1, 6-4.
D.J. Caloia and Kyle Hagrman got a shutout in doubles, topping Scott Barrington and Garrett Strang 6-0, 6-0, while Tom Chaddock and Mike Ferrara earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ryan Lange and Alex Olschewske.
