With all of the snow cleared out, area high school track and field teams were able to fit in most of the season-opening meets on a cold, windy Wednesday afternoon.
West Genesee hosted Auburn and had little trouble winning both portions of this meet, sweeping the Maroons 115-21 on the girls side and 90-47 on the boys side.
For the WG girls, Abby Kuppinger, Olivia Becker and Caitlin Mills each won twice, Kuppinger had a 400-meter dash time of 1;05.2 and then claimed the triple jump by going 27 feet 6 ½ inches.
Becker went 17.6 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 13’7” in the long jump as Mills took the 400 hurdles in 1:18.1 and the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds. Natalie Buckhout (800 meters), Faith Knox (1,500 meters) and Mia Mitchell (3,000 meters) swept the distance races as Etana Davis (discus) and Sandra Gardino (200 meters) also prevailed.
Moving to the boys meet, WG had Esisas Brumfield tear to a time of 10.8 seconds in the 100 sprint and claim the 200 in 23.2 seconds, while Matt Bartolotta went 4:53.5 in the mile and won the 3,200 in exactly 11 minutes.
John Henri Youmas swept the shot put (37’5”) and discus (100’10”) as Jack Sakran had a top long jump of 17’8”, Hopetan Wellington cleared 5’4” in the high jump and Marcus Body topped 8’6” in the pole vault.
Dan Gill won the 110 hurdles in 16.3 seconds and helped Brumfield, Jakob Petrocci and Patrick Peris take the 4×100 in 45.4 seconds. Wade Ferris was first in the 400 hurdles.
Jordan-Elbridge hosted Cazenovia in OHSL Liberty division competition, with the girls Eagles taking a 97-44 defeat to the Lakers.
Still, J-E had some winning efforts, including Vassianna Klock going 1:08.1 in the 400 sprint and Abigail Burns taking the 400 hurdles in 1:20.5 as Coral Uhle was first in the 800 in 2:48.8.
Uhle and Klock also helped J-E win the 4×400 relay in 4:45 flat as Meagan Jackson threw the discus 78’10” to finish second, just ahead of Cassandra Gates (75’9”), with Kyra White second in the pole vault, clearing 7’6”.
In the boys meet, J-E lost 84-57 to Cazenovia, but Marion Quigley still stood out for the Eagles, winning three events and nearly taking a fourth.
Quigley beat the field in the 110 hurdles in 15.5 seconds and the 100 sprint in 11.4 seconds, had a top long jump of 18’5 ½” and was second in the high jump, clearing 5’6” behind the 5’8” from Cazenovia’s Dalton Sevier.
Derek Quigely and Nate Williams both cleared 10 feet in the pole vault, with Kenny Williams taking the 800 in 2:21.1 ahead of teammates Matt Kent (2:22.1) and Mike Bennink (2:22.4).
Lee Jewell had second-place finishes in the mile and 3,200, but did manage to help the Eagles win the 4×800, pairing with Williams, Bennink and Derek Quigley for a top time of 9:04.9.
Skaneateles took on Hannibal in its opening meet, and were quite successful on the girls side, topping the Warriors 82.5-49.5 as Emme Conan swept to first-place finishes in the 100 sprint in 13.1 seconds and the 200 in 27.5 seconds.
Lyda Buck had a top long jump of 12’6” and Edan Howard threw the discus 68’9” to win those events. Hope Cross-Jaya was first in the 800 and Lily Yengo claimed the 3,000 as Conan, Buck Graeson Landsberg and Eva Vitsaxaki took the 4×100 in 55.4 seconds.
the Skaneateles boys fell 87-40 to Hannibal, though Caleb Bender did get first place in the mile in 4:53.0 and the 3,200 in 12:02.0.
Joe Norris went 2:17.1 in the 800 to beat the field, with Nicola Kunz second in the 110 hurdles in 16.6 seconds and second in the high jump, clearing 5’4”. Ryan Wilcox had a second-place long jump of 16’1” and Nick Paciorek was second in the 400 sprint in 1:03 flat.
