What the Cazenovia boys track and field team expected fromWednesday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championships at Marcellus was the same kind of success it had enjoyed in the regular season.
And that’s exactly what happened.
The Lakers piled up high finishes in every discipline, from sprints to distance races to relays to field events, and with 163 points held off Hannibal (134 points) to win the seven-team event. Jordan-Elbridge was third with 125 points.’
It was capped by Cazenovia’s 1-2 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the final race of the night.
James McPherson, who had just finished third in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 39.39 seconds, recuperated quickly and, in the steeplechase, pulled away to win in 10:40.01 as Noah DeRochie finished second in 10:50.23.
The Lakers also swept the top spots in the discus, where Christian Winkler unleashed a top throw of 145 feet 2 ½ inches, beating Angelo Annotto, who grabbed second place with 121’2 ½”.
Taking part in the five-event pentathlon, Ian Marshall took the lead in the shot put and never gave it back, ultimately earning 1,995 points to hold off Jordan-Elbridge’s Derek Quigley (1,880) for the top spot.
Cazenovia also prevailed in the 4×100 relay, where the quartet of James Pavelchak, Justin Gagnon, Sam DeLeon and Slater DeLeon went 45.51 seconds to finish more than a second ahead of J-E’s second-place 46.63.
Sam DeLeon cleared 11 feet and won the pole vault, with Collin Killiany third by topping 10’6”. Ray Satchwell went 39’9” in the triple jump to finish second ahead of Slater DeLeon (39’3 ¼”) in third place, with Satchwell also second in the long jump by going 19’7 ½” and DeLeon finishing seventh.
In the 4×800, McPherson, DeRochie, Jack Gabor and Nick Barna finished second in 8:46.34, just behind Hannibal’s winning 8:43.23. Gabor was third in the 800-meter run in 2:09.43, while DeRochie also took fifth place in the mile in 4:56.87 as Jared Smith was eighth. DeRochie finished eighth in the 800.
Pavelchak was third in the 100-meter dash in 12.15 seconds, while Gagnon was fifth (12.32) as, in the 200-meter dash, Pavelchak (24.65 seconds) beat out Slater DeLeon (26.85) for third place.
Gagnon, who was seventh in the 400 hurdles, went 16.89 seconds in the 110 high hurdles to gain second place as Jacob Olkowski (17.90) finished sixth to go with his ninth in the 400 hurdles.
Austin Sanders emerged with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5’8” as Dalton Sevier was sixth with 5’4”. Annotto had a fifth-place shot put toss of 38’3 ¾” as Chad Carges was seventh with 34’1”.
In the 4×400 relay, the Lakers had Pavelchak, Olkowski, Gabor and Cormac Race get third place in 3:41.77. on his own, Race was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 55.01 seconds as Andrew Kent (55.40) got sixth place.
