With a Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division regular-season title secure, the West Genesee wrestling team went after more honors when it hosted last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships.
Picking up a total of 204 points, the Wildcats topped everyone except Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA, who won with 235.5 points. Still, four different WG wrestlers earned individual titles.
At 99 pounds, Nate Wade pinned Harrison Portorsnok (Cicero-North Syracuse) to reach the final where, in 3:33, he pinned Rome Free Academy’s Ashton Thompson.
Devin Earl took the title at 145 pounds with a tough 7-2 win over Ali Salem (Fayetteville-Manlius) after a semifinal pin of J-D/CBA’s Alikhan Abdullayev.
Victor Elias, at 160 pounds, pinned F-M’s Alex Dauksza and, in the finals, held off Liverpool’s Anthony Piscitelli in a 5-2 decision. And Cole Wade prevailed at 182 pounds by pinning Liverpool’s Ron Cyr and, in his title bout, topping C-NS’s Julian Zavaglia 10-3.
Three other WG wrestlers got to the finals, including Griffin Sasso (170 pounds), who lost a tough 4-1 battle to CBA/J-D’s Jake Wright. At 138 pounds, Brady Ryan fell to another J-D/CBA star, Garrett Bauer, 10-2, as Chandler McAvan reached the 195-pound final before a 4-3 loss to yet another J-D/CBA wrestler, Adam Honis.
At 126 pounds, Ejarian Burgin pinned RFA’s Garrett Craft for third place. Patrick Ivery (132 pounds) and Randell Ouimet (220 pounds) each had fourth-place finishes as Jackson Taetsch (99) blanked Baldwinsville’s Aiden Cali 7-0 for fifth place. Mike Sarakos was sixth at 152 pounds.
Marcellus had its wrestling team finish fifth out of 11 sides during last Saturday’s sectional Class C tournament at Hannibal, earning 125 points as Holland Patent (203.5 points) edged Canastota (202 points) to grab the top spot.
Cahal Donovan’s superb season continued with the title at 132. In the semifinals, Donovan had to pin his own teammate, Jack Santariello, in 95 seconds to reach a captivating final with Adirondack’s Keagan Case that ended 12-8 in Donovan’s favor.
Jack Santariello would go on to finish fourth while his brother, Carl, earned third place at 99 when he pinned Cazenovia’s Stan Angus in the third period.
At 106, Ryan Moses earned a third-place finish with a pin over Canastota’s Evan Austerman. Tim Okhman was fourth at 126 and Tom Kinsella finished fourth at 170.
RileyLaFrance beat Patrick Nourse (Cazenovia) for fifth place at 145. Robbie Seeley beat Steven Boyer (Hannibal) 4-2 for fifth place at 160. Quinton Weaver got sixth place at 120, matching Wilvon McKee’s finish at 215.
Jordan-Elbridge also wrestled at the Class C sectional meet, where Josh Roberts won three of four bouts and claimed third place at 285 pounds with a pin over Canastota’s Nate Saunders.
Marion Quigley finished fourth at 138, with Derek Quigley fourth at 120. Landry LaFleur gained sixth place at 170, beating Eagles teammate Cameron Newhook on the way to that finish.
WG had started its week last Monday by routing Syracuse City 75-9, which included several forfeits, but plenty of pins in the Wildcats’ favor, too, along with an overtime bout where Colin McAvan (120 pounds) used a takedown to beat Abdulwahab Algasab 8-6.
Vince Calabria, at 120 pounds, had the quickest pin, taking just 28 seconds to finish off Ben Williams after Gavin O’Neill (113 pounds) had a first-period fall over Sidalin Mohamed.
Brady Ryan (138) and Cole Saxon (145) each took exactly 93 seconds to pin, respectively, Laxmi Poudel and Jose Arocho. Michael Sarakos (152 pounds) pinned Khaled Algasab in 2:40 and Griffin Sasso (170 pounds) got his fall over Abednego Johnson in 3:03.
A 43-32 win over Auburn followed on Wednesday night, with the Wildcats primarily benefiting from five forfeits that amounted to 30 points, so it only won three times on the mat.
Chandler McAvan got an overtime takedown to beat Parker Hogan 5-3, with Colin McAvan handling Jamyr Grimes 12-1 and Patrick Ivery pinning Eric Anseth in the third period. Sasso lost, 3-2, to Keyshin Cooper, with Devin Earl taking a 5-4 loss to Hunter Duger.
