After ending last season as Section III, Class C sectional champs, the Cazenovia boys tennis team is getting ready for the 2017 season, in which the Lakers have changed classes.
Last school year, both the boys and the girls won Class C sectionals for the first time in over 20 years each. Both teams have moved into Class B this year, and the girls team once again won this past season — this time as Class B Champions. The boys, although they have a tough schedule ahead including matches against Jamesville DeWitt, CBA and Oneida, are looking to do the same, led by Head Coach Jennifer Hooley and Assistant coach Gordon Schutzendorf.
“Despite snow, the team has already been working hard to prepare for the season,” said Hooley. “With a move into Class B this year, we are preparing to face some of the strongest teams in Section III. This is a well-rounded, athletic and talented team that is up for the challenge. Led by captains Orson Sproule and Nate Romig, the team is already on a successful track with commitment and determination.”
During the 2016 season, the varsity Lakers were not only sectional champs, but also placed second in the Liberty League.
Captain Nate Romig, a junior, is returning as first singles for his fourth year. His record last year was 13-1, undefeated in class and league, and he finished first as the overall in Section III singles champion.
Captain Orson Sproule, returning this year as a senior, last year played first doubles, finishing second in Class C1 Sectionals. He has been preparing to play singles this year.
According to Hooley, more returning players to watch this year include Nick Barna (junior, first doubles last year), Liam Flannery (sophomore), Teddy Coughlin (sophomore) and Daniel Gavilondo (freshman). The top newcomer to watch is seventh grader Mitch Romig, she said.
“With a Section III champion, strong returning players and a top newcomer, Cazenovia is ready to challenge its way through Class B and has a chance to make another mark in history this year,” Hooley said.
