While each victory for the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team during its season-opening five-game win streak has proven satisfying, none evoked more satisfaction than Tuesday night’s 6-0 shutout of Alexandria Bay at Duke Schneider Arena.
A season ago, at the same venue (but on a different rink at Allyn Arena), the Islanders beat the Lakers in the Section III final and went on to take the state championship, too. Each Skaneateles player remembered that night, and couldn’t wait to see Alex Bay again.
It didn’t take long to find out that this game would not resemble the sectional final. Attacking hard, and converting, the Lakers bolted to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period, getting two of those goals from leading scorer Megan Teachout and another from Abby Kuhns.
Not content with that, Skaneateles found the net twice more in the second period and once in the third period, doubling its margin while, at the same time, seeing its defense shut down the Islanders, holding them to 10 shots, all stopped by Johna Halko.
Teachout would notch her third hat trick of the season, adding a third goal in the late going. Sophia Kush and Ioanna Christou earned goals, too, while single assists were credited to Sophia Burns and Allison Weiss.
Skaneateles took its 5-0 record into the holiday break, and would resume its season Jan. 6-7 with a trip east for two games against Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.
