Amid a large and talented contingent of Section III runners, Baldwinsville girls cross country sophomore Justus Holden-Betts would conclude her season competing in Saturday’s Nike Cross Nationals New York/Northeast Regional Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
In all, 150 runners took part in the girls regional meet, and Holden-Betts beat most of them, working her way to 34th place in a time of 19 minutes, 37.2 seconds, just one part of a tremendous effort by local runners.
Fayetteville-Manlius again won the girls team title, while the F-M boys avenged its Section III Class A championship defeat to Liverpool by topping the Warriors in this race, though both teams advanced to this weekend’s Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
Five F-M girls – Claire Walters, Phoebe White, Palmer Madsen, Rebecca Walters and Sophia Ryan – finished within the top 15, with Walters getting third place in 17:58.8 as Katherine Lee won in 17:44.8. Tully eighth-grader Brooke Rauber, who was fourth in the Federation championships on this same Bowdoin Park course seven days earlier, finished 11th here in 18;45.5.
Also, Liverpool’s Ty Brownlow won the boys individual race in 15:42.2 and his teammate, Stevie Schulz, finished third in 15:46.9, with the Warriors’ Josh Hickmott in ninth place and F-M’s Patrick Perry leading his side, finishing eighth.
