Both Cicero-North Syracuse track and field sides would test itself at West Genesee last Wednesday afternoon, and the girls meet turned into a classic, with the Northstars depending heavily on its strength in field events to hold off the Wildcats 67-65.
Of the five contested field events, C-NS prevailed in four, two of them by Kierrah Butler, who threw the shot put 33 feet 3 inches and added a top discus throw of 87’9”. Shayla Webb prevailed in the triple jump, going 33’9”, while Liliana Klemanski cleared 5’2” for first place in the high jump.
Though WG won most of the individual races and two of three relays, the Northstars did enough to hang on. Cassandra Baldwin won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.68 seconds, with Sasha Pulaski taking the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds. Pulaski, Sydney Florczyk, Amanda Reilly and McKennaBradford took the 4×100 relay in 53.40 seconds.
C-NS had, back on April 28, swept Baldwinsville, winning 88-53 on the girls side as Baldwin cleared 5’1” to edge Liliana Klemanski (5 feet) in the high jump as she also took the 100 hurdles in 16.35 seconds and finished second in the long jump and triple jump.
Bradford was first in the 100 (13.93 seconds) and 200 (28.61 seconds) sprints and helped C-NS take the 4×100 relay in 54.86 seconds. Destiny Monica threw the shot put 33’9”, just ahead of Butler (33’4”), while Butler got a winning discus throw of 87’1” to beat out Kiana Garcia (84 feet).
C-NS also swept the 4×100 (54.86 seconds) and 4×800 (10:25.15) relays as Florczyk, Reilly, Annina Marullo, Megan Trubia, Mia Pestle, Sarah Davis, Bailey Lazore, Reilly, Abby Szumloz, Lauren Witek and Anna Slate took part.
The boys meet between C-NS and B’ville was closer, but the Northstars prevailed, 76-65, overcoming the Bees’ strength in field events with a near-sweep on the oval, with Mahana, Andrew Bearkland and Jeremiah Willis leading the way.
Bearkland ran the mile in 4:44.14 to edge Brandon Matin (4:44.36) as he also took the 800-meter run in 2:01.77, holding off B’ville’s Evan Vannatta (2:02.16). before Joe Tricarico (10:16.72) and Noah Poirier (10:24.63) went 1-2 in the 3,200-meter run.
As for Mahana, he went 15.21 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and blazed to a time of 58.14 seconds in the 400 hurdles to prevail over Joe Williams (1:00.36). In the 4×400 relay, Mahana, Matt Williams, Allen Garnes and Zach Kennedy prevailed in 3:31.28 after Bearkland, Poirier, Zach Wagner and David Ware went 8:46.38 in the 4×800.
Willis saved his best for the sprints, winning the 100 in 11.27 seconds and the 200 in 23.16 seconds. George Reader cleared 6’2” to win the high jump while finishing second in the long jump (19’9 ¾”) and triple jump behind B’ville’s Austin Catalano.
From there, the C-NS boys went on to rout West Genesee 107-25 on Wednesday, with Mahana going 15.90 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and 1:00.38 in the 400 hurdles. Kennedy won the 400 sprint in 52.59 seconds as Tricarico took the 3,200 in 10:30.42 and Wagner won the mile in 4;50.93.
Reader had a first-place long jump of 19’7 ½”, with Tyler Mosher throwing the shot put 45’6” to prevail. Tyler Days claimed the triple jump, going 39’8”, and Joe Williams cleared 5’6” for a victory in the high jump.
