The term “Himalachian” is a clever blend of the words Himalaya and Appalachian. Central New York’s creative rock trio the Honky Tonk Hindooz invented the term to describe their music, American country and roadhouse roots tunes inspired by Appalachian folk tunes and honed with a healthy dose of Himalayan cosmic consciousness.
On the other hand, the Hindooz more simply label their sound as “weirdo rock’n’roll.”
The Honky Tonk Hindooz will perform their inventive mix of psychedelic garage rock and offbeat oldies at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Liverpool Public Library, 310 Tulip St., at the corner of Second Street. Admission is free; lpl.org; 457-0310.
Guitarist-bandleader Terry Quill says the trio makes music the old-fashioned way — with heart and soul and a sense of humor. “We play real, raw music with signature swagger,” he said
Besides Quill — one of CNY’s most versatile six-stringers — the Hindooz feature the tall and talented Theresa Walsh on accordion and the upright Taylor Price on acoustic bass.
Hope to see you Sunday afternoon diggin’ the tunes at the library’s Carman Community Room!
Feral pig burger
One of the most popular sandwiches served at Sharkey’s Bar & Grill is the gamely named Ben’s feral pig burger. The half-pound hand-patted ground beef-and-pork burger is topped with thick-sliced pork belly, sautéed onions, cheddar and a secret aioli sauce on a buttered brioche roll, all for $9.99.
A few newer menu items at the tavern located at 7240 Oswego Road (Route 57) include a Sharkey’s melt Angus burger, a breakfast stuffed burrito, a Guinness bratwurst on a pretzel roll and a berry-licious salad studded with blueberries, strawberries, dried cranberries and raisins. Check them out at sharkeysbarandgrill.com; 214-4116.
Touchdown bloody marys
Gridiron junkies may want to take in their favorite weekend games down at the Limp Lizard Barbecue, 201 First St. The barmaids there are now serving touchdown bloody marys all day every Saturday and Sunday to celebrate televised college and pro football games. The Limp Lizard now hosts a trivia night at 7 p.m. Mondays, a lively open jam session on Tuesday nights, mid-week dart leagues and QuickDraw every day. Live music continued there Saturday, Nov. 19, with tunes by Hold the Air, and precocious country-music singer Savannah Harmon is booked for 8 p.m. Nov. 26. Annual traffic jam returns
The 27th annual Lights on the Lake begin at Onondaga Lake Park on Wednesday Nov. 16 and continue through Jan. 8, 2017. You can expect increased traffic through the village.
Too bad Onondaga County Parks doesn’t take the advice of village officials, who have long urged that the holiday illumination display move its entrance from Route 370 to the other side of the park at Long Branch Road. That way the long lines of vehicles waiting to drive through the park would not tie up the village streets. Instead, Lights on the Lake viewers would exit the display at Route 370 (Onondaga lake Parkway), from which they could easily access village retailers and restaurants following their Christmastime outing…Think about it as you’re stuck in Lights traffic this month and next. And maybe mention it to your county legislator.
