Girls in grades 6-12 are invited to enroll in the Girls Who Code club, a 15-week program that will meet every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 8 at the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) in North Syracuse.
Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit working to close the gender gap in technology by encouraging girls to impact their community in a positive way through coding. The organization was founded to help address the growing gender gap within the tech field. Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet fewer than 1 in 5 computer science graduates are women.
Participants will learn programming languages, how to program, edit, and share code, build websites and other related skills, and they’ll explore the potential of computer science as a tool to impact the world. Prior coding skills are not required in order to participate in the club. The club will follow a curriculum established by the national Girls Who Code organization.
Beyond teaching real computer science skills, boosting students’ confidence, and preparing them for college and careers, Girls Who Code also offers a one-of-a-kind community, described as “a supportive sisterhood of peers and role models” who encourage and support one another.
Space is limited. Registration is required and is for the full length of the program. For more information or to register, please call the library at 315-458-6184.
