CLAY — Sen. John W. Mannion (D-Geddes) has awarded the Liberty Medal — the highest honor the New York State Senate can bestow — to Nathan Bustin, 13, of Clay, for his heroic and life-saving actions on Jan. 3, 2021.
“In the face of unspeakable danger at high speeds, Nathan’s quick and decisive actions undoubtedly saved the lives of his mother, himself, and untold bystanders,” said Mannion.
“Nathan Bustin has demonstrated remarkable character beyond his years. … He is part of a wonderful, caring family, takes pride in his academic achievements, and is destined for great things. It was my honor to meet Nathan, his parents Lisa and Cary, and his sister Abby — we are fortunate to have them in our community. This action was amazing, but it is clear it will not be Nathan’s greatest accomplishment.”
Nathan was a passenger in a car driven by his mother, Lisa Bustin, when she suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness. As the car was speeding down Route 481 in the town of Cicero, Nathan took control of the steering wheel but could not reach the pedals. He successfully navigated the vehicle off the highway via the East Circle Drive exit. Unable to use the brakes and with the car now accelerating as Lisa’s foot slipped unknowingly onto the gas pedal, the Bustins’ car hit another vehicle and finally came to a stop on Route 11 (Brewerton Road.) With the airbags deployed, Nathan exited the vehicle and pulled his mother to safety. Onlookers then assisted and Lisa was transported to the hospital. Thankfully, she has now fully recovered and neither Nathan nor the other driver suffered any injuries.
The New York State Senate unanimously approved awarding the Liberty Medal to Nathan Bustin. Mannion recently presented the award to Nathan at the family’s home in Clay.
