WCNY is accepting nominations for its Women Who Make America Awards in each of the 19 counties in its viewing area: Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates. Nominations are due by Dec. 20.
The awards first started in collaboration with the PBS documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America.” Since then, WCNY has continued the Makers Awards as a way to celebrate the achievements of Central New York women and inspire others to follow their examples.
Nominees must be 18 or older and should be women who are making significant contributions in any of the 19 counties WCNY serves. Nominees will be evaluated on how they impact their communities to shape today’s America.
A nomination form is available online at wcny.org/makers or by calling 453-2424. Nominations also can be sent by postal mail to WCNY, P.O. Box 2400, Syracuse, NY 13220-2400.
The winners will be honored at a reception on March 10 at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls. Central New York has a strong connection to women’s rights, from the birth of the women’s movement in Seneca Falls in 1848 and the efforts of women like Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage and Harriet May Mills to secure equal rights for women.
Winners also will be featured on WCNY radio and television, social media, WCNY’s website and in an upcoming issue of WCNY’s bimonthly member magazine.
