Though it had to wait a couple of extra days, the Skaneateles girls track and field team didn’t mind, given the results.
The Lakers claimed the Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet on Wednesday at Fulton, earning 133 points to fend off Westhill-Bishop Ludden (120 points) for that top spot.
Originally set for Monday, the league meet got postponed due to weather concerns. By the time they did compete two days later, cold temperatures and win had replaced heat and humidity, but regardless of conditions, the Lakers would flourish.
Skaneateles went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash, where Maddie Peterson prevailed in 1:01.56, holding off teammate Shannan Roberts (1:02.45) for that top spot. Right after that, Mia Grasso, in 1:07.94, pulled away from the field to win the 400-meter hurdles as Westhill-Ludden’s Annibel Coolican (1:10.50) was second.
In the 800-meter run, Julia Willcox won in 2:24.52, with the closest pursuer, Westhill-Ludden’s Megan O’Reilly (2:33.89),more than nine seconds behind. Willcox, Liz Dwyer, Finan Malcolm and Natalie Condon pushed to second place in the 4×800 relay in 10:14.57, with Cazenovia (10:09 flat) in front as Malcolm later took fifth place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:30.4.

Amanda Wetmore, Laurel Parker, Katelyn Ellison and Angela Krause were second (51.32 seconds) to CBA (a school-record 50.96 seconds) in the 4×100 relay, while Willcox, Grasso, Roberts and Gage got second place in the 4×100 in 4:13.53, inches behind CBA (4:13.17) at the line.

Krause had a third-place triple jump of 31’9″, with Willcox seventh, as Grasso was fifth (4’10”) and Aubreah Lynn sixth (4’8″) in the high jump. Katherine Carlile threw the discus 76’6″ to get fifth place.
Over in the boys OHSL meet at Fulton, Skaneateles picked up 50 points, but that left them in seventh place in a 10-team field as Westhill-Ludden (96 points) held off Cazenovia (92 points) for the title.
No one topped the Lakers in the 4×800 relay, though. Connor Hill, Cooper Watt, Griffin Lawson and James Hackler roared to victory in eight minutes, 36.94 seconds, with Hannibal (8:43.52) far back in second place.
Later, in the 4×400 relay, that same quartet won again, in 3:34.53, leaving Cazenovia (3:36.73) and the field behind them. Hill prevailed on his own, too, going to the 400 sprint and, in 51.44 seconds, blew away the field, with the runner-up, Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Sage Bartlett (54.38 seconds), nearly three seconds behind.
Tommy Hagen followed by winning the 400 hurdles in 1:01.54 over Syracuse ITC’s Tyree Allen (1:02.75) and the field, with Lawson second (2:00.97) to ITC’s Soloman Lawrence (1:58.92) in the 800.
