With a pair of impressive meet wins, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team quickly moved to the top of the CNY Counties League National division.
To start with, the Northstars met Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday and had 24 points before it even had to contest a match in a 66-9 romp of the Hornets.
F-M forfeited the first four matches to Noah Whitenour (195 pounds), Jared West (220 pounds), Matt Mastro (285 pounds) and Joe Barber (99 points) – and CNS followed it up with six straight won on the mat.
That included Connor Osborne, at 113 pounds, pinning Austin Feltrinelli in 21 seconds and Joe Copani (120 pounds) getting a 54-second pin over Luke Rufo.
Drew Dyer, at 106 pounds, blanked Eric Mohr in a 16-0 technical fall. Tony Battista (126 pounds) won a tight 11-9 match over Pat Quinlan, while Jake Murdock (132 pounds) handled Jake Norton 11-4 and Matt Dunham (138 pounds) shut out Tristan Bodders 12-0.
Later in the meet, Kiel Dyer, at 152 pounds, pinned Tim Byrnes in 1:06 and Andrew Osborne (160 pounds) took 1:22 to finish off Christian Dobrzynski. Jake Claflin, at 170 pounds, edged past Angelo Pavone 8-7.
Two nights later, CNS faced West Genesee and trailed with five matches to go, but was perfect from that point forward to beat the Wildcats 50-24.
It was 24-20 in WG’s favor when Mastro went on the mat and pinned Joe Clancy midway through the second period, putting the Northstars ahead for good. Barber followed up by pinning Jake Jones in 2:34.
Drew Dyer clinched the meet when he pinned Chris Chigaridas in 1:20, but CNS wasn’t done. In just 48 seconds, Connor Osborne pinned Yvan Kouakou, and Copani capped things when he pinned Jon Stefano in 1:42.
Prior to all this, Battista started the meet with a 17-0 technical fall over Tyler Heggelke. Dunham won again by getting past Nick Longo 6-2, just before Tom Peterson, at 145 pounds, took 1:42 to pin Tim Schreyer.
Other than Andrew Osborne’s second-period pin of Matt Calascibotta, the Northstars lost five of the next six matches, but limited WG to decisions in four of them, keeping things within reach before the fast finish.
After hosting the Blindmen’s JV Tournament on Saturday, CNS mostly rests next week, only competing Wednesday night at Oswego.
