A new documentary about artist and Stone Quarry Hill Art Park founder Dorothy Riester is set to be screened in Cazenovia on March 1.
“Art on the Hill,” directed by Susie Cody, explores the story of Riester’s life as an artist, her love of nature and its importance in creative growth. It tells how Dorothy and her husband Bob were motivated to form the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park and create a place the public could enjoy.
The footage for the film was collected over the last two years and includes appearances from SQHAP board members and fellow artists, the former executive director and well-known sculptor Patrick Dougherty, who did an instillation at the park very early in his career.
“Dorothy possessed a carefree spirit that leaves me in wonder,” said Cody, who directed and produced the film. “She must have seen a clear path for herself and boldly walked down it.”
The film is 32 minutes long and will be the first time an audience has viewed it in its entirety.
“I plan to ask for feedback from the Cazenovia community and then make any changes before I plan other screenings and submit it to festivals,” Cody said.
Attendance is free, but donations will be accepted to help offset the cost of production and festival entry fees.
The screening will occur at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Catherine Cummings Theater on Lincklaen Street in Cazenovia. A question-and-answer session will follow the film.
