CENTRAL NEW YORK – Ahead of a key showdown early this week against Cicero-North Syracuse, the West Genesee boys basketball team won its only contest last week at Nottingham, recording a 70-63 victory over the Bulldogs.
They had an active first half, the Wildcats adjusting to it and taking a 40-32 lead to the break before it spent the rest of the game fending off all of the Bulldogs’ attempts to catch up.
Most of Jordan Cain’s 20 points came from five 3-pointers. Sincere Smith earned eight of his 18 points at the free-throw line as Gary McLane got 13 points, Joe Cavallo nine points and Jalen Zachery eight points.
Jordan-Elbridge and Skaneateles both lost to private school last Tuesday as the Eagles fell 74-45 to Bishop Grimes and the Lakers lost to Christian Brothers Academy 60-45.
Any hopes for J-E were dashed when the Cobras outscored them 49-20 over the course of the second and third quarters. The Eagles had little offense outside of Nolan Brunelle’s 17 points and Preston Murray’s 14 points as Nate Abernethy, in particular, stood out for the Cobras, pouring in 29 points.
As for Skaneateles, it got 19 points from Reed Danforth and nine points from Cater Loi, but little else from a CBA side that, breaking a four-game skid, was led by Tavin Penix’s 17 points and Connor Morgia’s 11 points.
Skaneateles recovered Friday to beat Cazenovia 65-48, outscoring those other Lakers 42-27 in the second half to get away as Danforth had 21 points, five rebounds and three steals, with Jack Peenstra adding 13 points and eight rebounds. Charlie Girzadas contributed 10 rebounds and three blocks on the defensive side.
J-E, meanwhile, nearly doubled up its opposition, routing Section V’s Clyde-Savannah 78-46 in a game where it steadily piled up points and built up a 61-25 lead through three quarters.
Nolan Brunelle filled up the stat sheet thanks to 27 points, 12 assists, six steals and three rebounds. Murray got his own double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds as John Travernia got 10 points. Chase Brunelle contributed six points.
A week removed from its defeat to Marcellus, Westhill returned to the court Friday and topped PSLA-Fowler 75-57, bolting out 24-10 in the first quarter and never getting caught.
Kam Langdon produced 21 points, four rebounds and three assists. Charlie DeMore had 19 points and nine rebounds, with Eli Prince stepping up to get 18 points and six rebounds. Jackson Goodness added seven points.
