CENTRAL NEW YORK – A special season for the Westhill girls tennis team might include a league championship by the end of September.
The Warriors faced Homer last Tuesday and, partially due to a sweep in singles, defeated the Trojans 6-1.
Julia Flegel got it going with a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Mackenzie Skodzinsky, with Cadence Ramsing topping Georgia Wallis 6-2, 6-2 and Phoebe Gumaer beating Ginny Park 7-6, 6-2.
Westhill also went 3-1 in doubles as the teams of Megan Battista-Emily Balduzzi, Jane Stanton-Clare Delay and Emily Taylor-Camryn Matthews each prevailed in straight sets.
Back on Wednesday, it was Marcellus taking on Skaneateles and the Mustangs managing to get the best of this long-simmering rivalry, edging the Lakers 4-3.
It all came from doubles, capped by a three-set battle where Caitlyn Sammon and Selia Matthews had to survive two long sets and a 10-point tie-breaker to edge Millie Wu and Ellie Sharma 7-5, 5-7, 10-5.
Sophie Clarke and Ella Lutwin routed Makayla Barron and Georgia Kriedler 6-1, 6-1, while Xian Angotti and Abby Finn paired up to beat Bryn Butler and Madelyn Vance 6-2 and 6-1. In first doubles, Korrine Kemp and Shaelyn Kelly handled Caitlin Day and Katie Danforth 6-3, 6-1.
This made up for the Lakers’ singles sweep. Isabelle Soderberg got past Sofia Tufenkjian 6-2, 6-1 as Eva DeJesus blanked Katie Devereaux 6-0 6-0 and, by those same scores, Addison Ziegler put away Molly Moses.
Earlier in the week, Skaneateles had shut out Phoenix 7-0, with Soderberg, DeJesus and Ziegler giving up just three games in six sets of singles play.
Among the three contested doubles matches, Danforth and Caitlin Day handled Elizabeth Bullis and Gabby Reynolds 6-2, 6-4, with Kriedler and Butler winning 6-3, 6-3 over Carielys Calderon and Phoebe Christian. Vance and Barron beat Regan Southworth and Annabella McKay 6-2, 6-3.
After it beat Skaneateles, Marcellus blanked Mexico 7-0 on Thursday. In single-set matches to eight games, Angiotti edged Jessica Hill 8-6 as Kelly and Clarke won in singles, too. Devereaux and Abby Finn paired up in doubles to win 8-3 over Nataleigh Smith and Kinzy Laffan.
Then, in Friday’s 7-0 win over Chittenango, Marcellus played single-set matches to 10 games, with Clarke winning 10-5 over Liz Ezzo and Angotti topping Ally Bartoszek 10-4. Molly Moses and Ella Lutwin won a 10-5 doubles match over Campbell Reed and Saige Burton.
West Genesee challenged Baldwinsville last Monday afternoon and found lots of success in doubles against the Bees, yet still took a 4-3 defeat after getting shut out when they first met Sept. 15.
Getting it underway, the Wildcats had Lauren Batagglia and Nicole Vasilev need just two sets for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aiden Dubois and Juliette Pawelek.
In three sets, Cynthia Schlenker and Evelina Mauro got past Carmela Budzich and Laine Zoanetti 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, while Kailyn Drury and Hannah Sparks went through three long sets and a late tie-breaker to win 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) over Layla Trendowski and Jasmine Rowda.
However, Angelina Allen and Ava Amodio lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to Lainey Nesbitt and Sonia Nadzan, with Calina Olson and Angelina Allen both losing singles matches in two sets as Sarah Domin fell to Ella Clary 7-5, 6-4.
WG was successful Saturday in a 5-2 win over Cicero-North Syracuse, with Helena Allen winning in singles to join Domin, who beat Calista Nguyen 7-5, 6-4, and Amodio, who rallied past Madelyn Shaw 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Doubles points went to the teams of Olson-Angelina Allen and Battaglia-Vasilev.
