CENTRAL NEW YORK – Girls tennis teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa both proved successful in a busy week of matches inside and outside of the SCAC Empire division.
For its part, J-D handled Nottingham 6-1 last Monday as Mona Farah and Olivia Clark did not surrender a game in either of their singles matches, nor did Jadea Robinson and Anna Hasegawa in doubles. Working a bit longer, Yara Farah and Olivia Quackenbush got past Hsay Wah and Azmira Suljic 7-5, 6-1.
Just 24 hours later, J-D beat the rain and Oswego in a 5-2 decision with singles points to Mona Farah and Kayva Arasu, who beat Maelynn Freeman 6-0, 6-2. The Rams claimed three of four doubles matches, all in straight sets.
A 7-0 shutout of Syracuse West followed on Wednesday, with Arasu’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Bayisenge Marie-Claire the closest of the three singles matches also won by Clark and Mona Farah Two doubles matches were forfeited.
ESM faced Oswego last Monday and got in the win column, too, the Spartans toppling the Buccaneers 5-2 as the doubles teams of Gianna Brilbeck-Katelyn Davis, Jewelianna Halleck-Oso Ikhide and Presley DeJulio-Lila O’Brien each won in straight sets.
Brooke Kirkpatrick added a point in singles as Erin Murnane lost to Emery O’Brien 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, but Sophie Jones, one game from defeat, rallied for a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over Sophia Cahill.
By that same 5-2 margin on Wednesday, ESM prevailed over Central Square, keyed by Rhiannon Cobb’s rally to beat Olivia Ruzekowicz 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in singles. Kirkpatrick also won in singles as, in doubles, Brilbeck-Davis, Hallock-O’Brien and Ihkide-Abigail Cain each prevailed in two sets.
Then, in a non-league 4-3 win over Liverpool Thursday afternoon, ESM dropped each of the three singles matches, but saw the doubles teams of Brilbeck-Davis, Cain-Ihkide, Hallock-O’Brien and Caroline Jones-Christy Sitnik all win in straight sets.
ESM prevailed again on Friday, blanking Nottingham 7-0 to move its record to 5-3 overall. Jones’ 6-3, 7-5 singles win over Lucy Lombard was far closer than romps from Kirkpatrick and Murnane, while in doubles Cobb paired with Caroline Sitnik to turn back Azmira Suijic and Hsay Wah 6-4, 7-5.
Bishop Grimes managed a single point in a 6-1 defeat to Pulaski, the Cobras breaking up the shutout with Sofia Ziankoski, in first singles, rallied past Lexi Charsky 2-6, 6-1, 9-7. Then Grimes lost 7-0 to Skaneateles on Wednesday.
