ONONDAGA COUNTY – A special season continues to unfold for the West Genesee baseball team, regardless of what opposition it faces or what elements it must overcome.
When Baldwinsville paid a visit last Tuesday afternoon, the Wildcats quickly struck in damp, chilly conditions and breezed to a 10-4 victory over the Bees.
Chasing B’ville starter Colin Ray by the third inning, WG had a three-run first, a run in the second and batted around in a six-run third inning for a 10-0 advantage.
Jacob Severson, with a double and three RBIs, led the attack. Cameron Noce also doubled as he drove in a pair of runs and RBIs also went to Vince Firenze, Ryan Saroney and Anthony Augello.
Pitcher Landyn Shaw threw six scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out five without a walk, before a Bees seventh-inning rally forced Gabriel June to get the final outs.
These same two teams would battle again on Saturday afternoon at B’ville in sunny conditions, but the different climate produced the same result – a lopsided Wildcats victory, this one by a 10-1 margin.
The Bees sent its hard-throwing senior, Gavin Miller against WG’s freshman sensation, Colin Crinnin, who had gone 4-0 so far this spring, but Miller never made it out of the top of the second.
Five straight Wildcats reached base, two of them hit, three of them on walks, and a pair of wild pitches scored runs to produce a 2-0 edge.
Even after Reid Rachwal relieved Miller, the Wildcats tacked on four more runs, making it a six-run rally with just a single hit – an RBI single from Talon Elkins.
As if this wasn’t enough, the Wildcats added three runs in the third, two of them racing home on Elkins’ single, which made it 9-0 and out of B’ville’s reach as Saroney and Landon Spencer each scored twice.
Given that big cushion, Crinnin cruised to his fifth straight decision, keeping the Bees off the board until the bottom of the fifth and only giving up two hits before scoreless relief frames by Ryan Tabaczyk and Charlie Seales.
Marcellus lost last Tuesday to Homer 12-2, the Trojans scoring in every single inning and the Mustangs shut out until the top of thee fifth, when Ryder Donahue singled and scored and Chris Loveless also crossed the plate. Nick Evans pitched and took the loss. An 11-0 loss to Christian Brothers Academy followed on Friday afternoon.
But the Mustangs turned it around Saturday and beat Skaneateles 5-2, getting the upper hand in this rivalry with single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, plus a two-run fifth, to grab a 5-0 edge.
Ethan Snyder bashed a home run, doubled, scored three times and got two RBIs, also pitching two innings of relief after Ethan Dilmore went the first five..
Both of the Skaneateles runs came in the bottom of the fifth, Patrick Herr driving home Keelan Marren with a single and then scoring himself. Nate Shattuck pitched 4 2/3 innings and got the loss.
Jordan-Elbridge took a tough 2-1 defeat to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last Tuesday despite six solid innings of pitching by Emerson Derby, who only allowed five hits. Nolan Brunelle tossed a scoreless inning of relief as David Dominick had two hits and drove in the Eagles’ lone run.
