ONONDAGA COUNTY – It was no small irony that the Baldwinsville girls golf team began its 2023 season last week, amid wet conditions and cold temperatures closer to the freezing mark.
A week earlier, the Bees were finishing up pre-season practices with the thermometer pushing well past 80 degrees, conditions more suitable to the end of the season than the beginning.
But all of that was gone when B’ville traveled to Greens at Beaumont for Monday’s opener against Cicero-North Syracuse Green, where it still had little trouble breezing to a 210-264 victory.
Over nine holes, Anna Falcone shot a 50 to lead the Bees and pace a top-four sweep. Amelia Hahn shot 53, with Eva Pawelek adding a 54 and Peyton Kowalski a 55, all of them ahead of the 63 by C-NS Green’s Jillian Bambino.
Two days later, it was even colder for the Bees’ match against West Genesee at Westvale, where in a shorter match it was able to win 136-142 over the Wildcats.
A close fight for low individual honors had Julia Quinn, with a 31, edging the 32 from WG’s Mia Barbuto and 33 from Sophia Simiele.
Then B’ville had the next three best rounds on the board, with Kowalski, Pawelek and Hayley Rocker each finishing at 35 ahead of the 37 by the Wildcats’ Olivia Snyder.
Another pair of SCAC Metro division matches are in store next week, the Bees facing Liverpool and league favorite Fayetteville-Manlius Green on its home course at Timber Banks.
