SYRACUSE – Once more, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy girls swim teams were together, competing against one another.
This time it was at Wednesday’s Section III Class B championships, where the Red Rams, with 386.5 points, held off the Brothers (358 points) for the runner-up spot behind New Hartford, who won with 519 points.
Leading J-D’s efforts, Gwen Lister won twice, going two minutes, 15.77 seconds to prevail in the 200-yard individual medley.
Then, in the 100 breaststroke, where she had already qualified for the Nov. 18-19 state meet at Webster, Lister won in a season-best 1:08.11, with Margaret Lister second in 1:12.16.
J-D also got a win when Kayla McQuaid prevailed in the diving competition held on Oct. 29. McQuaid earned 434.65 points nearly reaching the state qualifying standard of 440.00, pulling away from New Hartford’s Liliana Mulcahy, who was second in 371.35.
CBA had Sophia Osvoldik make her way to fifth place with 296.65 points. J-D’s Zoe McCarthy was right behind in sixth place (296.20) as Kaia Etuale was eighth with 288.05.
Gwen Lister, Margaret Lister, Olivia Ogata and Thearyn Wales were second in the 200 medley relay in 1:58.90. CBA had Sofia Ciereck, Jenna Filhan, Claire Krueger and Ella Zaryski take third in 1:59.64.
That same Rams quartet would go to the 200 freestyle relay and, in 1:46.49, finish a close second to Whitesboro’s 1:45.64. Krueger, Zaryski, Anna Fuller and Madison Cecilia were fourth for CBA in 1:47.97.
Margaret Lister, in 2:07.99, tied for second in the 200 freestyle, with Wales fourth (2:08.41) and Samantha Wheeler fifth in 2:11.69. Ogata was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.99, with Wales third in the 500 freestyle in 5:44.55.
In the race portion of the sectional meet for CBA, Zaryski, in 25.56 seconds, was second to New Hartford’s Sienna Martin (25.27) in the 50 freestyle.
Filhan went 1:06.83 to grab second place in the 100 butterfly , with Josie Lachut fifth in 1:10.17 as Filhan also was fourth in the 200 IM in 2:23.93, with Fuller sixth in 2:27.93.
Fuller rose to third place in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.21, edging Zaryski (1:05.84) in fourth place. Krueger was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.79 and seventh in the 100 freestyle in 58.93 seconds.
To close out the meet, Fuller, Filhan, Cecilia and Zoe Thayer helped CBA get second place in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:04.37, two spots ahead of J-D (4:11.07) in fourth place.
Two days later, in the sectional state qualifier at Nottingham, CBA actually finished with 155 points to J-D’s 150, the two schools finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, as New Hartford claimed the George Falwell Cup for the first time since 2005.
But it was McQuaid who, earning 469.50 points in diving, qualified for the state meet, finishing second overall to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kaitlyn Carroll, who nearly matched her own sectional record winning with 513.60 points.
Gwen Lister went 1:08.12 in the 100 breaststroke, second only to the 1:06.65 from Fayetteville-Manlius’ Elise Wratney as Margaret Lister was fourth in 1:11.94 and Krueger (1:13.10) was seventh.
Swimming well in the 200 IM, Gwen Lister was third in 2:18.30 as Wales was eighth in the 500 freestyle in 5:48.61, both with Ogata and Margaret Lister to finish seventh in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.68.
J-D took fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:58.47, just ahead of CBA (1:58.69) in sixth place as the Brothers also got eighth place in the 400 freestyle relay in a season-best 3:59.81.
Also for CBA, Fuller went 1:04.39 in the 100 backstroke for sixth place as Zaryski was sixth in the 50 freestyle in 26.01 seconds, with Filhan ninth in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.68 and Krueger 10th in the 100 freestyle in 58.46.
