CENTRAL NEW YORK – When the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team met Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon, it looked to improve upon finishing second to the Norhtstars in the April 30 Chittenango Invitational.
But the Hornets were not quite able to do so, taking a 75-63 loss while, at the same time, F-M’s boys team got a big league victory when it defeated C-NS 75-65.
In the boys meet, several different individuals stood out, including distance runners as Will Seamans ran 800 meters in two minutes, 3.84 seconds, Anthony Otis took the 1,600-meter run in 4:39 flat and Nolan McGinn went 10:18 to prevail in the 3,200.
Jackson Burton’s time of 12.04 seconds gave him a win in the 100-meter dash, with Connor Ball going under a minute to win the 400 hurdles in 59.76. Denim Hall was first in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 11 inches.
Over in the girls meet, F-M saw Natalee Barber go 16.99 seconds in the 100 hurdles before unleashing a top long jump of 14’10 1/2”, the only time the Hornets would win a field event.
Hannah Kaercher also won twice, going 1:02.51 in the 400 sprint before tearing to an 800-meter time of 2:22.21 as Amelia Amack won the 3,000-meter run in 10:24.0.
East Syracuse Minoa remained undefeated in the boys SCAC Empire division, handling Oswego 97-44 as the boys and girls Spartans (who prevailed 111-30 over the Buccaneers) both saw school records fall.
Michael Parks broke his own school mark in the boys 110 hurdles, going 14.1 seconds to post the state’s fastest time in that event this spring, along with a top long jump of 19’8 1/4”.
Kevin Hasty unleashed a discus throw of 115’7” to go with a shot put of 41’10 1/2”. Caleb Byrd also won twice, taking the 800 (2:12.9) and 1,600 (5:09.3), while Luke Mancini cleared 10’6” in the pole vault.
Rocky El, going 11.1 seconds in the 100 sprint, led a group of race winners that included LaShaun Benjamin taking the 400 sprint in 55 seconds and Dan Tovar ran the 200 in 23.4 seconds.
Meanwhile, in the girls 100 hurdles, Akuot Kuany tore to victory in 15.6 seconds, shattering the school record of 15.6 set back in 1989 by Felicia Jones as Rhiannon Butchko excelled in the high jump, clearing 5’4”.
Also for the girls Spartans, Rylie King took the 200 in 27.7 seconds and the 100 in 13.2, with Rachael Ladd winning the 1,500 in 5:33.5 and the 3,000 in 11:47.0 as Elena Vespi won the 800 in 2:41.2.
Amber Hayes was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:15.7. In field events, Arianna Finkelstein threw the shot put 32 feet and Sophia Jackson went 94’6 1/4” in the discus as Margaret Mading had a shot put throw of 31’10” and Akasha Nunnelly won the pole vault.
Jamesville-DeWitt met Central Square and Cortlnad last Wednesday, with the boys Red Rams winning 111-29 over the Purple Tigers and 89-52 over the Redhawks.
Fresh off his record-setting pentathlon performance in the Chittenango Invitational, Caleb Smith ran the 100 sprint in 11.6 seconds and went 20’10 1/4” to take the long jump.
Shane Garguilo went 1:04.3 in the 400 hurdles, with Sam Smith taking the 800 in 2:06.4. Cameron Corona cleared 8 feet in the pole vault as Cade Fowler threw the discus 100’2” and Rafael Vallerdes cleared 5’6” to win the high jump.
J-D’s girls split the three-way meet, beating Cortland 83-54 but falling to Central Square 74-66. Still, Brooke Hulbert was able to go 1:18.7 in the 400 hurdles and Hailey Webber threw the shot put 29’4” as Ella Dolce highlighted the Redhawks with a pole vault of 11’6”
