CENTRAL NEW YORK – Perhaps the last thing the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team needed was to see another blast of winter weather.
Sporting a 4-2 record, the Lakers saw some valuable practice time taken away by last week’s snowstorm, even if it didn’t alter the game schedule.
So Cazenovia found itself facing Westhill last Thursday night, a difficult opponent in any circumstances, but made more so by the time it would take to find its game rhythm again.
In a 14-2 loss to the Warriors, the Lakers did not get on the board until the second half, by which point Westhill was well out in front, having steadily built a 7-0 advantage in the first half.
Maren Smith and Katie Rajkowski had those goals, with Hadley Schug earning an assist. Mackenzie Halliday had five saves as Grace Winkler and Rosemary Mahoney led Westhill, each with four goals and one assist.
Playing again on Sunday, Cazenovia lost, 17-3, to Marcellus, with the only goals coming from Madison DeAngelis, Dali Dennisson and Riley Knapp as Claire Card (five goals, one assist) and Anna Spitzer (three goals, three assists) led the Mustangs.
Chittenango returned to action on Thursday against Jordan-Elbridge and, led again by Tomi Newkirk, the Bears ripped past the Eagles 15-3 to improve its overall record to 5-1.
Newkirk finished with four goals and two assists, supported by Ashley O’Hara and Cara Kielbasa, who each had three-goal hat tricks. Brooke Walters scored twice, adding an assist as Skyler Brown, Alazayah Smith and Caitlin Sgambellone had one goal apiece.
