CENTRAL NEW YORK – The first full week of October meant that the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls swim teams would have plenty of opportunities to compete.
In the Warriors’ case, that meant going to Oswego Tuesday night and taking a 98-88 defeat to the Buccaneers, who managed to win every single event on the card.
Liverpool’s Arianna Kuznia went 59.83 seconds in the 100 freestyle and 2:12.80 in the 200 freestyle to take second in both events, with Kaitlyn Thompson second in the 50 freestyle (26.56 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:07.26).
Emerson Gellert went 2:35.14 in the 200 individual medley as she and diver Sofia Valente (188.35 points) also were second. Sarah Colwell was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:54.08 and Kerry Hunter was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.55.
To lead Oswego, three different swimmers won twice, with Kiarrah Tynan taking the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Mallory Upcraft the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and Grace Wing the 50 and 100 freestyles. The Bucs also swept the 200 medley (1:59.85), 200 freestyle (1:42.99) and 400 freestyle (3:57.79) relays.
C-NS, meanwhile, found itself at Cazenovia College, going up against a Fayetteville-Manlius side that won its 56th consecutive meet by downing the Northstars 94-84.
There was still some highlights for C-NS, though, especially in diving, where Kaitlyn Carroll put up 264.20 points to pull away from F-M’s Grace VanBramer (197.05) as Sophia Sugrue was third with 193.75 points.
Also, Brittany Wood was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.40, to go with Cassidy Svoboda taking second in the 100 butterfly (1:12.51) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.94) and Anna Myers second in the 200 IM as Julia Kulakowski got second in the 200 freestyle.
F-M had both its 200 medley (1:53.86) and 200 freestyle (1:41.40) relay teams qualify for the state meet, as did Emma Luttrell on an individual basis as she took the 200 IM in 2:12.63.
Swimming again on Thursday against New Hartford, C-NS lost 99-86 to the Spartans, who was led by Emma Burke’s two individual wins in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly plus two victorious relay efforts.
Carroll gave the Northstars another victory in diving, earning 228.25 points as Sugrue improved to 192.55 points in second place.
Svoboda went 26.63 seconds to claim the 50 freestyle, with Kate Gucciardi taking the 100 freestyle in 58.60 seconds and pairing with Svoboda, Wood and Carroll to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.25.
On her own, Gucciardi went 2;09.67 in the 200 freestyle, one-hundredth of a second behind New Hartford’s Isabella Freiberger (2:09.66) as Wood was second in the 100 butterfly and Kulakowski got second in both the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke, where her 1:10.70 just trailed Julia Ficano’s 1:09.67.
Liverpool has its own meet with New Hartford and C-NS faces Baldwinsville before they both go to Nottingham next weekend for the Salt City Athletic Conference championship meet.
