CENTRAL NEW YORK – After they met each other in the first week of September, the Cazenovia and Chittenango soccer teams scattered to test themselves against a wide variety of foes.
Staying undefeated, the boys soccer Lakers took apart Watertown IHC 6-2 last Tuesday at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, with J.D. Dolly again quite productive as he scored twice and got an assist.
Dan Millson backed up his goal with a pair of assists as Charles Aronson, Sully Clarke and Dan Raymond also found the net. Matt Compeau, playing in goal, recorded five saves.
Now that six-game unbeaten streak would get tested Thursday against Christian Brothers Academy, who rose up and gave the Lakers its first defeat of the season.
In the 4-2 loss to the Brothers, Cazenovia was overwhelmed in the first half, CBA notching four unanswered goals. To its credit, the Lakers did cut that margin in half after intermission as Millson netted one goal and assisted on Clarke’s tally. Compeau earned eight saves.
Chittenango’s boys team, who had tied Cazenovia 1-1 on Sept. 9, went from there to 6-1 romp over Oswego two days later and then a fun match with Phoenix last Monday where, in the second half, where the Bears pulled clear to beat the Firebirds 4-2.
They were tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, but Chittenango’s depth ultimately made the difference as it got four goals from four different players.
Arthur Paul, Tom Navin, Josh Boulter and Jacob Scheidelman took turns converting, with Paul joining Andrew Graf in the assist column. It took 11 saves from Phoenix goalie Jacob Neupert to keep it close.
An exciting game at Mexico followed on Thursday night, with Chittenango shut down throughout 80 minutes of regulation, but prevailing 1-0 in overtime when, less than three minutes into the extra period, Scheidelman, from a steep angle 20 yards out, scored off a feed from Lawson Pagorek.
Cazenovia’s girls soccer team entered the week at 2-2, but fell below the .500 mark last Monday due to South Jefferson, who shut out the Lakers 2-0.
Under constant pressure, Cazenovia goalie Hannah Ruddy made 10 saves and kept South Jefferson off the board for a while, only to see the Spartans broke through in the second half as Jackie Piddock and Macy Shultz found the net.
Amid a stretch of what was supposed to be seven straight home games, the Lakers saw its game with Holland Patent last Wednesday night postponed due to the heavy rains which saturated the Goggin complex.
But Cazenovia did play against Jordan-Elbridge on Friday night, and Julia Reff scored twice in the first half as Lily Clonan added a goal. Leigha Fostvelt had an assist, and the Lakers’ margin held up as it blanked the Eagles 3-0.
Earlier in the week, Chittenango got overwhelmed in a 9-1 defeat to Mexico, its fifth consecutive loss, which it looked to turn around against Altmar-Parish-Williamstown two days later.
At last, the Bears did hit the win column, blanking the Rebels 4-0 as Madison Wagner led the way, notching a goal and two assists. Maryanna Garcia, Cara Kielbasa and Brooke Walters also converted as Alyana McDowell stopped all seven APW shots she faced. But Chittenango lost 10-0 to Skaneateles on Saturday afternoon.
