ONONDAGA COUNTY – Though it has gone through a fair share of struggles in this abbreviated and altered 2021 season, the Baldwinsville boys volleyball team has also enjoyed some bright moments.
That included last Tuesday’s match against Syracuse City, where the Bees prevailed in four sets.
Each of the first two sets went 25-16 in B’ville’s favor. To its credit, Syracuse did pull out the third set 25-23 to prolong the match before the Bees closed it out 25-9 in the fourth.
John Morrissey had seven kills, with Xzavier Vanderstouw adding four kills. Austin McClintic produced three kills.
On the back line, Carter Healey gained 10 assists and three aces, with Dylan Wertheim getting seven assists. John Morrissey had four digs and Vanderstouw got three digs.
Having improved to 3-5 overall, B’ville took on Jamesville-DeWitt Thursday night and nearly made it back-to-back wins, only to fall to the Red Rams in four sets.
They split the first two sets by equal 25-19 margins, the Bees winning first and J-D answering. Then a close third set went 25-23 in B’ville’s favor.
Once again, though, the Rams rallied, taking the fourth set 25-21 and, in a final set that would go back and forth and feature a couple of missed match points, J-D edged in front and won it 16-14.
Healey, with his 32 assists, also got four kills and passed it to where Ben Stisser finished with a team-best nine kills. McClintic, Morrissey, James Brussel and Adam Lobdell had seven kills apiece as Vanderstuow got 10 digs and Morrissey had seven digs, plus four aces.
On J-D’s side, Ty Parker had 12 kills, James Saroney 10 kills and Jack Moore six kills, helped on the back line by Nolen Brann witn his 31 assists and Owen Opalnieck earning 10 digs.
Then, in Saturday’s match at Central Square, B’ville returned to the win column, needing just three sets to put away the Redhawks 25-13, 25-19, 25-20.
This improved the Bees’ mark to 4-6, with tough matches against Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse this week.
