The West Genesee girls basketball team had not played since losing its Feb. 12 opener to Cicero-North Syracuse., having seen a game with Baldwinsville a week later postponed.
But the Wildcats did play on Saturday and gained its first win of the season, leaning on a quick start to handle Central Square 51-42.
Steady play throughout the first half produced a 31-17 edge, and that margin held until the Redhawks made a late comeback that proved futile.
Catie Cunningham connected on 22 points, while Moly Benetti had 10 points and Mollie James seven points, WG overcoming 17 points from Central Square’s Morgan Ransom and 15 points from Juila Mann.
Westhill, who lost to Ludden in its Feb. 10 opener, rebounded with back-to-back wins, including last Tuesday’s 58-55 decision over Syracuse Academy of Science.
Catherine Dadey hit six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points overall. Tess Roesch had a career-best 11 points, with Kate Heinrich getting nine points and Kaylin Battista adding eight points.
Then the Warriors challenged Jamesville-DeWitt on Thursday, and were turned back in a 56-38 defeat to the Red Rams, who were making its season debut.
Dadey had 13 points, with Heinrich adding eight points. J-D outscored Westhill in every single quarter, led by Momo LaClair, who poured in 24 points and then passed 1,000 career points later in the week.
Jordan-Elbridge began its season Feb. 12 against Cato-Meridian, a game the Eagles were able to pull out, defeating the Blue Devils 41-37.
Abbie Ahern led the way, pouring in 16 points for J-E. Ava Hildebrandt hit a pair of 3-pointers as she and Kyler Langhorn had eight points apiece. Amber Clarke paced Cato with 13 points.
But then J-E ran into Weedsport last Tuesday and lost 70-36. Hildebrandt led witih nine points as Suzie Nemec paced Weedsport, earning 26 points.
Then on Thursday, J-E had a 45-37 defeat to Union Springs where, trailing early, it made a 16-7 run to lead 24-23 by halftime, only to get held to just a handful of field goals the rest of the way.
Langhorn had nearly half the Eagles’ output, earning 17 points, while Jazzy Stevenson finished with seven points and Abbie Ahern had six points. A 69-26 defeat to Onondaga followed on Friday afternoon.
