In between all the other tough challenges of its schedule, the Skaneateles boys soccer team had to confront a steady stream of OHSL Liberty division foes.
Homer visited Hyatt Stadium last Tuesday night, and all was fairly quiet until the second half, when the Lakers’ attack broke through and showed what it could produce in a pinch during a 4-1 win over the Trojans.
All through the first half, Skaneateles kept Homer pinned back, forcing plenty of work on Trojans goalie Ethan Lunas, who would finish with 15 saves and have to withstand 14 Lakers corner kicks.
Yet it wasn’t until after intermission that all the pressure led to shots that found the net. Twice, Jack Panasci scored, with Thomas Reed notching a pair of assists as he and Owen Cheney also earned goals.
Still at home Thursday night, Skaneateles welcomed Jordan-Elbridge and jumped all over the Eagles with five unanswered goals in the first half on the way to a 7-1 victory.
Reed found the net twice, adding two assists as Owen Cheney contributed a career-best three assists and Tylar Moss chimed in with two goals.
Gavin Cheney, Noah O’Connor and Aidan Tierney notched single goals, with Jack Donovan contributing an assist. Zach Fabreze had J-E’s lone tally in the second half.
On Saturday afternoon, Skaneateles traveled to Mexico, seeking its third win in a row. And while it proved far tougher than the previous games during the week, the Lakers rallied and prevailed, 2-1, in overtime over the Tigers.
Neil Deloch, off a feed from Evan Blunt, scored to give Mexico a 1-0 lead. It held until the second half, when Skaneateles pulled even and then, in the OT, earned the game-winner.
For both of those scoring plays, the Lakers could thank Tylar Moss, who assisted on goals by Sam Gadjo and Landon Hellwig. Each of the five saves made by Yorvin Solis proved important as Tigers goalie Josh Hadcock got 10 saves.
Moving to girls soccer, Skaneateles, coming off back-to-back defeats to Cazenovia and West Genesee, ended that skid last Wednesday night in an emphatic manner, defeating Hannibal 6-0.
Riley Brogan, Claire Raddant, Fallon Lynn, Tess Peterson and Katie Olsen each scored goals for the Lakers, who knew that it would have a tougher time dealing with its rivals from Marcellus on Saturday.
Having won all four of its games so far, the Mustangs would conquer the Lakers 2-0, overcoming 19 saves by Skaneateles goalie Grace Kush.
Falling to 3-3 on the season, the Skaneateles girls would play Altmar-Parish-Williamstown and Jordan-Elbridge this week as the boys Lakers had a big Tuesday match with CBA before hosting Carthage Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
