Having just a little more depth on hand made all the difference for the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team during last Wednesday’s close, competitive three-sided meet against West Genesee and Baldwinsville.
The Northstars did just enough to edge the Wildcats 71-70, and the battle with the host Bees was just as tight, with C-NS holding off B’ville by a three-point margin, 72-69.
For its part, B’ville got five combined titles from Adrianna Straughter (100 hurdles, long jump and high jump) and Lauren Addario (100 and 200-meter dashes), while WG claimed two relays and swept every race from 400 to 1,500 meters.
But C-NS got plenty of second and third-place points, and also won the 4×800 when the quartet of Annina Marullo, Mia Pestle, Allison Newton and Abbee Norris posted a top time of 10 minutes, 3.48 seconds.
Pestle salvaged a track win for the Northstars when she took the 3,000-meter run in 11:07.40. Then C-NS claimed two field events as Kierrah Butler threw the discus 90 feet 1 inch and Sarah Davis took the triple jump, going 35’11”.
As it looked for the same kind of success, the C-NS boys were able to defeat West Genesee 97-44, only to get passed by Baldwinsville, who beat the Northstars 83-67.
Despite the chilly temperatures, Jeremiah Willis ran the 200 sprint in 22.85 seconds. Jalen Williams ran the 100 in 11.33 seconds, while Joe Williams went 15.18 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and unleashed a top triple jump of 43’10”.
Ryan Williams broke the one-minute mark in the 400 hurdles, winning in 59.16 seconds as Malcolm Christian, Jon Kephart, Isaiah Wright and Derek Harned took the 4×100 in 46.24 seconds.
B’ville won, though, by sweeping all of the top spots in the distance races, led by Ben Timmons taking the mile (4:42.60) and 3,200-meter run (10:01.21), plus two of three relays as Cameron Majchrzak prevailed in the shot put (43’5”) and discus (121’9”).
