All through its run in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team has found itself consistently outpacing most of the competition, but not yet reaching the top level occupied by Cicero-North Syracuse and West Genesee.
However, the Bees did get a valuable win last Tuesday night at Nottingham, where it avenged an earlier defeat to the Bulldogs by playing well in the second half and prevailed by a 59-51 margin.
Back when B’ville had started the season 8-0, Nottingham had come to the Baker High School Gym Jan. 3and ended that perfect run, handing the Bees a 57-49 defeat.
Starting with that game, B’ville had endured a 3-4 stretch, and the rematch with Nottingham threatened to go in the other direction, too, when a close first half ended 27-25 in the Bulldogs’ favor.
What turned it around was a strong third quarter where the Bees outscored Nottingham 18-10, and then held on behind a diverse attack that put four players in double figures, overcoming 20 points by Chyna Butler and 17 points from Amaya Williams.
Katie Pascale, with 16 points, led the way, earning eight of those points at the free-throw line. Carolyn Brussel had 11 points, with Alena Criss and Jenna Costello getting 10 points apiece as Meaghan Wilson added six points.
They were planning on a girls-boys doubleheader last night with B’ville visiting Fayetteville-Manlius, but bad winter weather forced yet another postponement.
Before making up those games this Saturday, the B’ville basketball would have high-profile battles with C-NS and Liverpool in the last full week of the regular season.
