Having seen its Duke Schneider Memorial Tournament wiped out by the winter storm on the first weekend of January, the Skaneateles boys ice hockey team forged ahead with more important games – or at least it hoped to do so.
And none was supposed to carry more weight than last Friday’s showdown with Auburn at Allyn Arena.
The Maroons had the no. 3 state Division II ranking, having beaten Skaneateles 6-5 when they met in the Nov. 22 season opener. But the Lakers carried the no. 11 state ranking and a seven-game win streak.
And all of it was rendered moot when another winter storm forced another postponement. They’ll make that game up on Jan. 25 at 7 pm.
Skaneateles played just once last week, at Haldane Memorial Arena, with the Lakers steadily pulling away for an 8-3 victory over Ontario Bay.
Once it gained a 2-0 first-period lead, the Lakers spent the rest of the game adding to that margin, with seven different goal-scorers and only Luke Lynn finding the net twice.
Bauer Morrissey had a goal and three assists, with Matt Leveroni and Jimmy Liberatore each getting a goal and two assists. Ryan Gick and Owen Van Holtz each had one goal and one assist as Charlie Russell got two assists and Tom Coyne also found the net.
Skaneateles is home all of this week, meeting Clinton and Victor (a make-up from the Schneider Tournament) back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then hosting the Division I Syracuse Cougars in a marquee clash Friday night.
