The new bowling seasons for Christian Brothers Academy and Bishop Grimes meant dealing with a reconstituted Onondaga High School League without many past league foes that had moved to the Salt City Athletic Conference.
As was the case before, all matches were at Strike-N-Spare Lanes in Mattydale, including the league opener last Monday, where Grimes and CBA met head-to-head.
The boys match went to Grimes by a 5-2 margin, with Joe Knapp shooting a 543 series for the Cobras as Jordan Newman’s 196 game led to a 531 set. For CBA, Vince Carno led with a 488 series as Matt Potenza’s 444 set included a high game of 187.
In the girls match, CBA shut out Grimes 7-0, with Olivia Ojugbeli leading the Brothers by posting a 387 series as Jiselle Cabezas had a 386 set. For the Cobras, Katie Collins put up a 383 series, while Katie Knittel had a three-game total of 337.
When East Syracuse Minoa returned to action last Tuesday, it was against Cicero-North Syracuse, who arrived at Bowl-Mor Lanes and prevailed over the Spartans 3-0 on both sides.
Sean Timmons shot a 638 series for the boys Spartans as Ryan MacCombie put together a 583 series. Yet they both watched C-NS’s Tim Cloonan get close to perfection in a 10-strike 278 game on his way to a 695 series.
In the girls match, ESM lost despite Haley Youker shooting a steady 638 series. Kathleen Bayly added a 193 game as the Northstars got a 601 series from Carly Lescenski and a 562 series from Kaitlin Antineli.
Fayetteville-Manlius took a pair of 3-0 defeats to Fulton that same day at Lakeview Lanes, but the boys match included some fine individual efforts.
Kevin Winschel gave the Hornets a 275 game in his 650 series, with John Buonfiglio getting a 677 series and Isaac Blanford adding a 597 series. But each of Fulton’s top five bowlers had series of 566 or better, with Brad Martin (663 series) and Joe Behevidez (635 series) leading the way.
In the girls match, F-M’s Hannah Brown led her side, shooting a 401 series. Shelby Minor added a 371 series, though it was far from the Red Raiders’ top bowlers as Lexi Ingersoll had a 630 series and Megan Guernsey got a 627 series.
Moving to Wednesday’s matches, ESM took on Syracuse at Bowl-Mor, with the girls Spartans prevailing 3-0 as Youker put up a season-best 268 game on her way to a 642 series. America Carhart had a three-game total of 571 (212 high game) as Bayly got a 514 series.
The ESM boys had their own 3-0 sweep of Syracuse, MacCombie emerging as the top individual with a 599 series and 222 high game as Timmons, with a 597 series (215 high game), was close behind.
Bishop Grimes handled Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 3-0 in the boys match, again having Knapp lead all individuals as he shot a 509 series with a 202 high game. Matt Vonden Steinen added a 438 series and Michael Reeve had a 180 game.
CBA’s girls lost 7-0 to Homer favor as Ojugbeli had a 352 series and Anna Ziemba had a 344 set. Julia Day, with a 469 series, paced the Trojans.
F-M’s boys team dropped a 2-1 match to Oswego Thursday at Green Lakes. Winschel still managed a steady 653 series, helped by Buonfiglio (578 series) and Blanford (520 series), thought the Buccaneers’ Eric Carson gained a 631 series (252 high game) and Connor Loadwick’s 245 game led to a 608 set.
On the girls side, the Hornets could not get a point against Oswego in a 3-0 defeat, with Shelby Minor managing a 474 series and 175 high game, though the Bucs’ Kaitlyn Grant managed a 223 game during her 576 set.
