Even though the second encounter between the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls tennis teams was closer than the first one, it still ended in the Warriors’ favor, a 4-3 decision on Sept. 15 where all four doubles matches went to three sets.
When they had met two weeks earlier, Liverpool had rolled to a 6-1 victory, but the Northstars showed plenty of resilience in the rematch, and needed to because the Warriors had won all three singles matches.
Julie Schewe cruised past Hanna Costello 6-1, 6-0, with Giana LaValle needing a second-set tie-breaker to close out Cara Temple 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). A bigger point came when Erin Chambrone rallied from a terrible first set to beat Nicole Perrigo 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
To put a C-NS point on the board, Jenna Wilson and Ava Breitbeck had to fight past Gabby Underwood and Crystal Morgans 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Also in three sets, Spivak and Anna Dwyer beat Erica Gibbs and Natalie Kidd 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
In a late-match comeback, the Northstars’ Danielle Dottler and Lexi Pyke got past Aryanna Davia and Diana Kozenyatko 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Liverpool finally got the point it needed when Meghan Blake and Valerie Morgans absorbed a first-set defeat to Vanessa Luangaphay and Miranda Szwej and still pulled out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 decision.
From there, C-NS went on to Monday’s match against Baldwinsville and lost another 4-3 decision, despite winning two of three singles matches. Temple got one of them, rallying to beat Hannah Gold 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 as Perrigo won, 7-5, 6-1 over Riley Warren. Costello lost to Brooke Tutor 6-0, 6-1.
Moving to the doubles side, Dottler and Pyke made their own comeback to win, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 over Taylor and Brooke Tripodi, but the Bees won each of the other three mtaches, including a good battle where Luangaphay and Wilson fell to Emily Faldeau and AllisonDelaney 6-4, 7-5.
Liverpool, meanwhile, blanked Syracuse East 7-0 last Monday, with Schewe and Chambrone each winning 6-1, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Nuy Pham and Kelly Huynh. In doubles, the closest match saw Blake and Valerie Morgans prevail, 6-3, 6-4, over Eve Llanos and Meiling Le.
Then the Warriors took its turn against B’ville on Wednesday afternoon, but had far more success than C-NS did, prevailing over the Bees 5-2 by claiming the only two matches that went to a third set.
In singles, with Chambrone having beaten Paige Tromblee 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, Kozenyatko trailed early against Benton Audrey, but came back to win it 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Then, in fourth doubles, Gibbs and Kidd won a long battle over Warren and Brooke Tripodi 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6.
Schewe and Blake paired up for a point, beating Gold and Delaney 6-2, 6-3, while LaValle and Davia teamed up and won, 6-2, 6-0, over Liz Daughty and Jessica Rush. Underwood lost to Alina Minkova 6-4, 6-2 as the Morgans sisters paired up, falling to Lauren Devine and Kathryn Grage 6-2, 6-4.
C-NS, meanwhile, was shut out 7-0 by Fayetteville-Manlius, with Breitbeck and Perrigo each playing singles and taking 6-2, 6-0 defeats to, respectively, Katerina Atallah and Anna Manta. Of the four doubles matches, Luangaphay and Pyke fared best, yet they also lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 to Maddy Drapeau and Diana Polovick.
To end the week, Liverpool took a 7-0 defeat to Class B power Oneida. Swept in singles, the Warriors were more competitive in doubles, where Schewe and Blake went to three sets in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 loss to Anna Hood and Julianna Cavanagh as Underwood and Crystal Morgans lost a third-set tie-breaker in a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-7) defeat to Catherine Brown and Emily Marshall.
