With each week, and each set of impressive victories, the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team moved closer to achieving an undefeated regular season.
The Lakers were navigating through its busiest stretch of the year, yet not tailing off one bit, as evidenced by last Monday afternoon’s 6-2 victory over Potsdam.
It was the team’s third game in four days following a Jan. 13-14 sweep of Plattsburgh and Beekmantown, though the latter of the two contests was a 3-2 decision, the closest game Skaneateles had faced all winter.
Perhaps remembering that struggle, Skaneateles bolted to a 2-0 lead on Potsdam by the end of the first period. The Sandstoners did get on the board in each of the last two periods, but the Lakers topped it to double its eventual winning margin and goalie Johna Halko was stingy, stopping 20 of the 22 shots she faced.
Sophia Kush, putting in three goals, earned her first hat trick of the season. Megan Teachout scored twice, while Anne Rutel delivered the other goal. Abby Kuhns earned a pair of assists and Allison Weiss added an assist.
Skaneateles took its 11-game win streak north to face Alexandria Bay on Wednesday night. Having beaten the Islanders 6-0 earlier in the season, the Lakers managed to do the exact same thing in the rematch.
However, this 6-0 victory was mostly built through a first-period surge where Skaneateles found the net four times. Single goals followed in each of the remaining two periods, and the win streak had reached 12.
Teachout led that early surge and earned another three-goal hat trick by game’s end. Kush’s two goals gave her five for the week as Ioanna Christou earned one goal and one assist. For the second game in a row, Kuhns had two assists, helped by Weiss, Johnna Halko and Campbell Torrey with one assist apiece.
In the last week of the regular season, the Lakers would visit Ithaca Monday, host Oswego on Wednesday and also make up a postponed trip to Clinton.
