Following a narrow defeat to Baldwinsville in its Nov. 30 opener, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys swim team rebounded by going to Weedsport Tuesday night and topping the Warriors 93-82 for its first win of the season.
The Hornets started out by having Tanner Eisenhunt, Nate Montgomery, Tristan Wellner and Richard Wang prevail in the 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 59.85 seconds. Two races later, in the 200 individual medley, Eisenhunt, in 2:18.95, led a 1-2-3 F-M sweep where Ben Well (2:34.74) edged Nick Topor (2:35.40) for second place.
Montgomery in 25.92 seconds, finished second in the 50 freestyle behind Michael Araujo, who won in 24.55 seconds. Wellner was nearly victorious in the 100 butterfly, going 1;07.59 to finish inches behind Ben Stroh’s top time of 1:07.48 as Wang was third in 1:09.29.
To complete his sprint sweep, Araujo, in 55.62 seconds, pulled away from Josh Lok (57.21 seconds) in the 100 freestyle. Wang led his own 1-2 effort in the 100 backstroke prevailing in 1:06.17 as Ben Well was second in 1:10.10. Jordan Krouse was third in the 500 freestyle.
This followed a Dec. 3 meet where Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA hosted Watertown and found itself unable to match the depth of the Cyclones, who prevailed over the Red Rams by a 105-81 margin.
And this happened even though J-D/CBA won the first three races. Owen Farchione, Spencer Schultz, Luca Bebla and Matt Schultz claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:43.85 right before Chris Bushnell, in 1:57.69, was the only swimmer to break the two-minute mark in the 200 freestyle.
Spencer Schultz, in 2:09.25, held off Watertown’s Nate Carlos (2:10.43) in the 200 IM, but was second in the 100 butterfly in 55.77 second behind Watertown star MacLean Crossley (54.22 seconds).
The Rams did have a 1-2 sweep in the diving competition where Ryan Evans pulled away to win with 238.7 points and Lucas Dekaney was second with 197.55 points. Jeff Gabriel swam the 100 freestyle in 52.39 seconds, but the Cycloens’ Ed Gaus won in 51.11 seconds.
Led by Caleb Way, who prevailed in 5:26.51, Watertown had a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 freestyle and then took the 200 freestyle (1;32.13) and 400 freestyle (3:36.60) in some of the season’s fastest times.
In between, though, Bushnell roared to a winning time of 58.75 seconds in the 100 backstroke, with Farchione second in 1:01.54 as Bebla, in 1:06.35, did enough to edge past Watertown’s Peter Victoria (1:07.66) in the 100 breaststroke.
Now J-D/CBA would rest until next Wednesday’s meet at Auburn, a day after F-M takes on the combined Syracuse City team at Cazenovia College, which serves as the Hornets’ home pool.
