Even after all that happened the week before, from Mary Jo Cerqua’s 500th coaching victory to a New York City trip that included a second-place showing at the John Glenn-Northport Invitational, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team didn’t forget the matches that followed.
In fact, the Bees got close to a shutout in last Tuesday night’s 25-7, 25-5, 25-6 sweep over Henninger, spending less than an hour on the court to put away the Black Knights and improve its record to 10-0.
Rachel Foertch, earning seven aces, set the night’s tone. Maddie Stone had 13 assists and Summer McClingtic earned seven assists, with Kiannah Titus getting seven kills and two aces. Michelle Voyer and Katie Welcher had three kills apiece, with Rilegh Kimball contributing three aces.
It figured to get a bit tougher when Liverpool visited the Baker High School gym on Thursday night, even though B’ville had swept them on the Warriors’ home court Sept. 22, and it was more difficult, with a rare lapse early in the match.
Having lost the first set 25-15, Liverpool began to fight back and, in the second set, pulled out a 25-23 decision, evening the match and, for a moment, worrying the Bees – but that moment did not last too long.
Angry at the rare set loss, B’ville took it out on the Warriors 25-9 in the third set. Liverpool made the fourth set a lot closer, but could not quite take the Bees to the wire and settled for a 25-20 defeat.
B’ville featured 38 assists from Stone, who added eight kills and six digs as Titus (11 kills, three digs) and Michelle Voyer (15 kills, 16 digs) paced the front line and Skyler Parrow-Strong had 19 digs. Welcher added six kills and five digs, and Sophia Cronk earned five kills. McClingtic had seven digs and Foertch contributed six digs.
Liverpool’s Caitlyn Metrick finished with 10 kills, five assists and 13 digs as Karlie King earned 13 kills and seven digs. Sophia Vangelov gained 11 kills and six digs as Katie Boak matched Metrick’s total of 13 digs. Ashley Teixeira had eight digs.
Moving to boys volleyball, Baldwinsville returned to action last Tuesday by sweeping the combined Syracuse City team by scores of 25-9, 25-22, 25-11.
Only the second set proved a hassle as Tyler Aiello produced a team-best 10 kills, with Riley Shanon and Ryan Shirk each earning seven kills. Ryan Carson contributed five kills as David Abraham fed all of them with 26 assists, adding six digs, the same total as David Cerqua as Dan Cerqua got four digs and three aces.
Playing again on Friday night, B’ville met Canisius, from Buffalo, and dropped a 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 decision to the Crusaders.
David Cerqua put up five aces and 12 digs, while Abraham managed 23 assists, with Aiello and Shanon each getting six kills as Carson again earned five kills. Nate Johns and Max Thurston both had three kills as Dan Cerqua contributed three aces. Canisius went on to beat C-NS, too, on Saturday afternoon in another three-set sweep.
