Nothing could spark the Baldwinsville girls swim team quite like claiming a home victory against a high-quality opponent.
That’s exactly what the Bees got in last Wednesday’s meet against Christian Brothers Academy, where a relay sweep, plus solid individual efforts from the likes of Noelle Staso, helped produce a 51-42 win over the Brothers.
To get it going, B’ville’s 200 medley relay team of McKenna Redmore, Julia Atkins, Allison Lange and Bryanna Spaulding paired up for a first-place finish in two minutes, 10.38 seconds, but the relay work was only beginning.
Later, in the 200 freestyle relay, Staso, joined by Erin Mordaunt, Anna DiOrio and Alyse Baker, helped the Bees win again, in 1:47.67. And B’ville clinched the meet when Staso, DiOrio, Mordaunt and Baker went 4:00.90 to prevail in the closing 400 freestyle relay.
Aside from her relay work, Staso also got a first-place time of 1:11.47 in the 100 breaststroke after she won the 50 freestyle in 25.45 seconds. DiOrio joined in with a 59-second conquest of the 100 freestyle.
CBA won the remaining individual events, two each by Julia Torell (500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Darien Tompkins (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle), but missed one of its top swimmers, Tessa Queri and was hurt by the lack of a diving competition.
With the win, B’ville improved to 2-3, heading off to meets this week against Auburn and Skaneateles.
