F-M tennis shutout streak continues

No opponent in the early stages of the regular season could even get a point off the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team.

This streak continued Sept. 2 during the Hornets’ 7-0 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse, where in singles Kristina Liu beat Madison Murphy 6-2, 6-1, with Patrice Calancie handling Hanna Costello 6-1, 6-2 and Anna Manta routing Sydney Franco 6-0, 6-1.

Again, the doubles matches took just two sets. Maggie Bonomo and Katerina Attalah beat Megan Tryniski and Brenna Duffy 6-0, 6-1, with Diana and Keara Polovick stopping Sarah Cooper and Sarah Wicks 6-1, 6-1. It took a bit longer for Abby Charlamb and Rachel Liu to beat Ava Breitbeck and Breanna Melfi 6-3, 6-1 as Gretchen Ayoub and Martha Welker notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Karrah Savage and Jenna Wilson.

In another 7-0 romp over Syracuse West last Tuesday, Calancie handled Kelsey Lent-Moore 6-1, 6-2, with Kristina Liu stopping Kayla Pagano 6-1, 6-0 and Manta shutting out Kyaw Kyaw 6-0, 6-0.

Meanwhile, in doubles, Welker paired in matches with both Ayoub and Diana Polovick, and they gave up just one total game. Bonomo and Attalah won, 6-0, 6-0, over Hanon Musa and Samiya Musa, with Maddy Drapeau and Cassie Wojtasiewicz getting their own 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Destiny Myers and Naujioanna Reid.

West Genesee was supposed to be F-M’s next opponent, but it got rained out, as did all of the other Thursday matches involving local sides.

Christian Brothers Academy proved quite impressive in its 6-1 win over Auburn on Sept. 2. Though Grace DelPino lost in singles to Julia Wagner 6-2, 7-5, Mikayla Santulli handled Celia Mattie 6-2, 6-0 and Anna Sasser pushed past Alexis Calkins 6-4, 6-0.

Sweeping all four doubles matches, CBA had Aubrey Mills pair with Alison Croucher to rally from an early deficit and beat Emma Solomon and Katherine Brundage 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Mills also helped Grace Coyne beat Anna Streeter and Mikayla Huntley 6-1, 6-2 as Karen Simone and Isabella Mead topped Lindsay Jarman and Sydney Merkley 6-4, 6-2. Sloane Nicoletti-Watson and Meredith Strott had a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jaime Whitford and Maggie Lesch.

From there, CBA went on to shut out Oswego 7-0 last Tuesday, with Sasser beating Alyssa Adner 6-4, 6-0 as DelPino beat Lauren Boshart 6-1, 6-2 and Santulli stopped Alaina McMahon 6-1, 6-1. None of the doubles matches featured any of the Brothers’ sides losing more than one game in any single set.

A day later, the Brothers won a 6-1 non-league match over C-NS. DelPino, Santulli and Sasser each won their singles matches in two sets, while in doubles Nicoletti-Watson and Strott needed three sets to get past Jenna Wilson and Karrah Savage 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. Coyne paired with Mills and Croucher paired with Rena Steele for doubles wins.

Jamesville-DeWitt returned to action last Tuesday and handled Mexico 7-0. In second singles, Margaret Frank topped Kayley Pettit 6-4, 6-2, while Olivia DeHoog defeated Kim Haegerty 6-1, 6-1 and Anna Sofia Hege picked up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Skylar Holt.

Each of the four doubles matches went to the Red Rams in straight sets. Jungyun Kim and Maya Pollock beat Emily Blunt and Abbey Myers 6-1, 6-1 as the teams of Natalie Alweis-Katie Tzizanis, Inka Gajri-Sara Gow and Sophia Foti-Riya Sharma also had two-set victories.

On Friday, J-D took a tumble in a 6-1 defeat to Baldwinsville, only getting a point out of doubles when Pollock and Kim rolled past Amanda Coogan and Lauren Devine 6-2, 6-2. Hege, Frank and DeHoog all lost in singles, with Alweis and Tzizanis going to three sets, but falling to Taylor Collado and Alina Minkova 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.

Manlius-Pebble Hill battled against Skaneateles last Tuesday, but took a 4-3 defeat to the Lakers. In singles, Grace Walsh rallied past Rachel Feeney 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, but Louisa Morrow and Annie Weiss both lost in straight sets.

In doubles, Lily Grenis and Halle Erwin stopped Isabella Kroon and Hope Glowacki 6-2, 6-2, with Sophie Novak and Anna Szombatha going to three sets to beat Angela Krause and Meg McNeil 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. One more point was needed, but Hannah Ebner and Amina Kilpatrick, two games from victory, could not hang on in a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Biver and Brinly Walawender.

During Friday’s 5-2 defeat to Chittenango, the Trojans saw Walsh go through three sets to beat Shannon Koegel 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, while Morrow fell to Kelly Gloo 6-2, 6-3 and Pamees Fezelli lost to Anna Norman 6-1, 6-1. Meg Curtis and Marinna Cousins got a doubles point, beating Alexis Drake and Nadia Cannistra 6-4, 6-2.

Bishop Grimes, who lost to Skaneateles on Sept. 2, could not get a point from Chittenango in last Wednesday’s 7-0 defeat. Still, two of the singles matches were close, with Katie Knittel falling in three sets to Anna Norman 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 and Liz Wolaver taking a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to Kelly Gloo.

A closer contest followed on Friday, with Grimes taking a 4-3 defeat to Marcellus. Rachel Christie rallied in singles to beat Marcy Gosson 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Wolaver blanked Caroline Keegan 6-0, 6-0 and Knittel beat Allison Clancy 6-2, 6-4. But the Cobras forfeited two doubles matches, and lost the other two in straight sets.

East Syracuse Minoa fell to Homer 6-1 last Tuesday, its lone point coming in singles, where Kim Pham beat Katie Mercer 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Ellie Huard lost to Brook White 6-1, 6-0 and Amber Unislawski had a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Rachel Crompton. The Trojans won all four doubles matches in straight sets.

By that same 6-1 margin, ESM fell to West Genesee on Friday afternoon, and again Pham prevailed, topping Andrea Wierbinski 7-5, 6-3. Combined, Noelle Zesky and Amber Unislawski earned just three games in their four sets of singles play, and the Wildcats swept the doubles matches, too.
