Alec Boone and Maddy Gavitt saved their best efforts for last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet, held at the same Cicero-North Syracuse venue that has hosted two previous state meets,
Given the familiarity of the surroundings, it was little surprise that Boone, in the boys Division II (small school) 100-meter dash, and Gavitt, in the girls Division II triple jump, topped their previous performances.
Boone entered the 100 having gone 11.31 seconds to reach this meet. Then he lowered that time to 11.26 seconds in his Friday heat, finishing 12th in Division II, less than a tenth of a second from advancing to the finals, which required 11.13 seconds. Letchworth’s Ray Anikwue won the state title in 11.02 seconds.
Meanwhile, Gavitt had produced a triple jump of 34 feet 10 inches to qualify for the state meet.
After going 34’5 ½” and 33’8 ½” in her first two attempts on Friday afternoon, Gavitt’s third attempt yielded a personal-best 35’2 ¼”, which left her in 13th place. Bayport-Bluepoint’s Kathleen Cibuls won with 38’10 ½”.
